Why do we love this wine?

This is our fourth vintage of this stunner and it’s been a hit with our mofos. Perhaps you’d open a bottle or two this year just to get a feel for the wine, but then lay the rest down to age. It’ll unwind beautifully as the years go on with absolutely no rush to pop a cork. Look out for blackberries, leather, forest floor, cherry, anise and pepper on the nose and palate. The tannins will be tightly wound and quite apparent now, but those will integrate nicely as time goes on. This is true, timeless class ready to endure some ageing.

Spicy and alluring notes of cumin, black raspberries, orange zest and cloves. It’s medium-bodied with tight-knit tannins and bright acidity. Excellent structure and freshness. Drink after 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

Brunello di Montalcino represents the pinnacle of Sangiovese expression, requiring 100% Sangiovese grapes and a minimum five years of ageing before release. The unique terroir of Montalcino's hillsides, with their varied soils and microclimates, creates wines of exceptional complexity and longevity. This Marco Lazzeretti bottling showcases the denomination's signature combination of power and elegance, with the structured tannins and concentrated fruit that make Brunello one of Italy's most prestigious wines.

While this wine is approachable now for those curious about its development, Brunello di Montalcino truly shines with patience - typically reaching peak drinking windows between 10-25 years after vintage. The 2018's tightly wound tannins will gradually soften and integrate, allowing the complex aromatics of blackberry, leather, and forest floor to fully emerge. Consider opening a bottle every few years to track its evolution, but expect the most rewarding drinking experience from 2028 onwards when the wine's full potential unfolds.

The wine's medium body and structured tannins make it incredibly versatile with food, particularly excelling with Tuscan cuisine like wild boar ragu, aged Pecorino cheese, and grilled portobello mushrooms. The herbaceous notes and cedar undertones complement herb-crusted lamb or beef dishes beautifully. As the wine ages and its tannins soften, it will pair even more elegantly with delicate preparations like truffle risotto or roasted game birds.

The 4.3 Vivino rating reflects both the exceptional quality of the 2018 vintage in Montalcino and Marco Lazzeretti's skilled winemaking approach. This score places it among the top tier of Brunello producers, indicating consistent delivery of the complex flavour profile and ageing potential that serious wine collectors seek. The rating also suggests excellent value proposition, as many Brunellos of similar quality command significantly higher prices from more famous estates.

Initially, you'll encounter primary fruit aromas of black cherry and blackberry, gradually giving way to more complex secondary notes of anise, pepper, and cedar as the wine opens up. With proper cellaring, tertiary aromatics of leather, forest floor, and earthy undertones will develop, creating the signature bouquet that makes aged Brunello so captivating. The herbaceous character adds a distinctive Tuscan terroir signature that becomes more pronounced and integrated over time.
