It’s only in the last decade, really, that gamay has established a footing on the international wine stage. And boy are we glad it has.

Why do we love this wine?

This is immediately fun and fresh. Confectionary raspberry, some cassis, plum and a little bit of snappy bubblegum come to the fore. What follows is a little more intricate and layered - some spice, dried flower petals, a bit of grassy, stemmy greenery. Bright and energetic, this is a perfect wine to grab on your way to the BYO - unfussy, easy drinking and packed full of flavour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unlike most Burgundy wines which are made from Pinot Noir, this Coteaux Bourguignons is crafted from Gamay - the same grape used in neighbouring Beaujolais. This creates a more approachable, fruit-forward style that's lighter and more immediately enjoyable than traditional Burgundy. The Coteaux Bourguignons appellation was created specifically to allow Burgundy producers to work with Gamay and other varietals outside the strict regional rules.

This wine's light-bodied, unfussy character makes it incredibly food-friendly and won't compete with diverse cuisines. Gamay's natural acidity and fresh fruit flavours complement everything from Asian dishes to casual Mediterranean fare. Its approachable style means it appeals to both wine novices and enthusiasts, making it ideal for group dining where palates vary.

Serve this Gamay slightly chilled at around 12-14°C to enhance its fresh, vibrant character and bright raspberry and plum notes. The cooler temperature will also emphasise the wine's natural acidity and make those confectionary fruit flavours pop. This serving style is typical for lighter reds and will bring out the wine's energetic, snappy qualities that make it so food-friendly.

The wine's bright acidity and fruit-forward profile make it excellent with charcuterie, roasted chicken, or salmon dishes. The spice and dried flower notes complement herb-crusted meats beautifully, while the fresh berry flavours work wonderfully with mushroom-based dishes - a classic Burgundian pairing. Its light body won't overpower delicate flavours, making it versatile for everything from cheese platters to light pasta dishes.

This 2021 Gamay is designed for immediate enjoyment and is drinking beautifully now. Gamay typically doesn't benefit from extended ageing like Pinot Noir, as its charm lies in those fresh, vibrant fruit flavours that are at their peak within 2-4 years of vintage. The wine's energetic, unfussy style suggests it's crafted for near-term consumption, so there's no need to cellar it - open and enjoy its youthful exuberance.
