Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Oof. Full-bodied, to be sure. Negroamaro is one of my 'try this' varietals; it is so powerful and intense that everyone who passes it under their nose is compelled to put it in their mouth. Salento is negromarao's spiritual (and actual, for that matter) home, and its where the grape gets the right treatment from the winemakers who know best. Spiced, oaky, very ripe black fruits, ripe tannins and an earthy, bricky savoury profile. Soft, round, plush, and punching above its weight class - this is an elite wine, to be sure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Negroamaro is an intensely powerful Italian grape variety that literally translates to 'black bitter', though modern winemaking has softened its harsh edges. Unlike more familiar varieties like Cabernet or Merlot, Negroamaro produces wines with a distinctive earthy, bricky character alongside its rich black fruit flavours. The grape thrives in Puglia's hot climate, developing thick skins that contribute to its full-bodied nature and ability to age gracefully.

Salento, located in Puglia's heel of Italy, provides the perfect terroir for Negroamaro with its Mediterranean climate, limestone-rich soils, and centuries of winemaking tradition. The region's intense sunshine and cooling sea breezes allow the grapes to achieve optimal ripeness while maintaining structure. Local winemakers have generations of experience coaxing the best from this challenging variety, understanding exactly when to harvest and how to manage its naturally high tannins.

Serve this Negroamaro at 16-18°C to showcase its complex aromatics and soften its robust tannins. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help integrate the oak and spice elements while allowing the wine to breathe. The wine's rich, plush character makes it perfect for hearty dishes like grilled lamb, aged cheeses, or rustic Italian fare. Its earthy undertones also complement mushroom-based dishes beautifully.

The 98-point rating from Luca Maroni, a respected Italian wine critic, indicates exceptional quality that places this wine among Italy's finest expressions. Maroni is known for his rigorous technical analysis and rarely awards such high scores. This recognition suggests the wine demonstrates perfect balance between its powerful fruit, integrated oak, and structural elements - remarkable achievement for a wine at this price point.

This 2020 Negroamaro is drinking beautifully now with its ripe tannins already well-integrated, but has the structure to evolve for 5-8 years. The wine's full body, balanced acidity, and oak treatment provide the backbone for graceful ageing. Over time, expect the primary black fruit flavours to develop into more complex tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, and dried herbs while the earthy, bricky characteristics become more pronounced.
