Franco Lourens is one producer that is achieving almost show-off levels of quality. This single vineyard grenache truly goes above, and well beyond.

Why do we love this wine?

After working for years under the tutelage of legendary vigneron Chris Alheit, Franco has struck out on his own (he also spent some time at Vasse Felix in Margaret River). Franco’s grenache has been named ‘Lue Ilse’ in honour of his first child, a daughter born in 2019. It’s quite perfumed with strawberry and raspberry notes along with some floral hints. Whilst it isn’t heavy, the palate has intensity, bright acid and present tannins. Finesse and power working in unison.

Frequently Asked Questions

This South African grenache showcases the cooler climate influence that allows for more delicate perfumed characteristics with strawberry and raspberry notes, rather than the jammy, high-alcohol style often found in warmer Australian regions. Franco's winemaking approach emphasises finesse over power, creating a medium-bodied wine that balances intensity with elegance. The organic farming practices and lower yields typical of South African boutique producers contribute to the wine's complexity and refined tannin structure.

Franco named this grenache 'Lua Ilse' in honour of his first daughter, born in 2019, making this wine deeply personal to the winemaker. This practice of naming wines after family members reflects the artisanal, family-focused approach that many boutique producers take, creating an emotional connection between the wine and its maker. The personal significance often translates into extra care and attention during the winemaking process, as these wines represent not just commercial products but family legacies.

Receiving 96 points from both Platter's Guide (South Africa's most respected wine publication) and Tim Atkin MW (a Master of Wine specialising in South African wines) indicates exceptional quality and consistency in assessment. These scores place the wine in the 'outstanding' category, suggesting it rivals the world's finest grenache expressions. The convergence of these high scores from different critics validates Franco's winemaking approach and positions this as a benchmark South African grenache.

The textured, savoury profile indicates this grenache has substantial mouthfeel and earthy complexity that pairs beautifully with Mediterranean cuisine, grilled lamb, or charcuterie. The present tannins and bright acidity provide structure that can handle richer dishes, while the perfumed fruit character won't overwhelm delicate preparations. This style bridges the gap between lighter Pinot Noir and fuller Shiraz, making it versatile for both casual dining and special occasions.

Chris Alheit is renowned for his minimalist, terroir-driven approach to South African winemaking, focusing on elegance and site expression rather than heavy extraction. Franco's training under this legendary vigneron is evident in the wine's restraint and finesse, showing how power and delicacy can coexist. This mentorship, combined with Franco's experience at Margaret River's Vasse Felix, has shaped his philosophy of creating wines that speak of place while maintaining accessibility and food-friendliness.
