Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Remember the good old days when fortified was a staple of our wine racks? Yeah me neither. But apparently it was the “go-to” grape drink of choice. Well, over the festive season I enjoyed this precious jewel alongside some sticky date pudding, pecan pie, Toblerone cheesecake, blue cheese with quince paste, chocolate croissants and fistfuls of walnuts and it made me understand the truth of Belinda Carlisle’s dulcet tones.... Heaven is a place on earth. This is decadence at its best and guess what.... YOU DESERVE THIS!

– Grant, Wine Dealer.

Feeling tawny? This Dark Angel from Lou Miranda is here to satisfy all your darkest fortified fantasies. It’s well equipped too, with 96 points from Wine Showcase and 94 from Sam Kim. More importantly, it’s smooth and sweet with toasted nut, toffee, spice and raisin notes. As Sam Kim says, “a splendid fortified wine offering maturity and sophistication” – just like you mofos.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Grand Tawny represents the sophisticated evolution of Australian fortified winemaking, moving beyond simple port imitations to create something distinctly regional. The Barossa Valley's warm climate and Lou Miranda's extended barrel ageing process develops those complex toasted nut and toffee characteristics that distinguish premium tawnies from younger fortified styles. The 'Grand' designation indicates extended maturation, typically 10+ years, which creates the smooth, mellow profile that's earned it 96 points from Wine Showcase.

Serve this Dark Angel slightly chilled at around 12-14°C in small port glasses to concentrate the aromatics. Unlike table wines, fortified wines are incredibly stable once opened - this bottle will maintain its quality for months if stored upright with a tight cork in a cool, dark place. The high alcohol content (typically 18-20%) and residual sugar act as natural preservatives, making it perfect for occasional indulgence without waste.

This full-bodied tawny excels with rich desserts and strong cheeses, as the wine's natural acidity cuts through sweetness and fat beautifully. The toasted nut and toffee flavours create magical combinations with sticky date pudding, pecan pie, or dark chocolate desserts. For savoury options, try it with aged cheddar, blue cheese with quince paste, or even foie gras - the wine's complexity and slight sweetness balance these intense flavours perfectly.

Non-Vintage (NV) designation is traditional for tawny ports and reflects the solera-style blending system used in production. Master winemakers blend wines from multiple years to achieve consistent house style and complexity, with older wines providing depth while younger additions maintain freshness. This approach allows Lou Miranda to maintain the Dark Angel's signature profile year after year, ensuring each bottle delivers the same award-winning experience that earned those impressive 94-96 point ratings.

This Grand Tawny is ready to drink immediately and represents peak maturity - the extended barrel ageing has already developed all those beautiful nutty, toffee characteristics. Unlike vintage ports that benefit from decades of bottle ageing, tawnies are designed for immediate enjoyment and won't significantly improve with further cellaring. However, the wine's stability means it can be stored for years without deterioration, making it perfect for special occasions whenever they arise.
