They say the hallmark of a brilliant Barossa Valley grenache is its ability to waltz a fine line between delicate and powerful, fruity and bold. And this stellar 2021 drop from a cranking small producer dances that waltz like a professional.

Why do we love this wine?

If you love a vibrant vino with bright red fruits that feel fresher than an early morning dip, then this fun and easy Barossa grenache is for you. With hints of sour cherry and notes of spice, white pepper and fine tannins it manages to be fine boned and damned delicious. Hailing from the southern end of the Barossa, the grenache was gently pressed to fend off excessive tannin extraction and with six months of maturation in French oak under its belt you'll be swatting away all hands but yours from the bottle!

Frequently Asked Questions

This Barossa Grenache showcases the variety's naturally elegant character through gentle pressing techniques that avoid excessive tannin extraction. Unlike bold, heavy reds, Grenache produces wines that are 'fine boned' with bright acidity and fresh fruit flavours. The medium body and vibrant cherry notes make it more approachable and food-friendly than many other red varieties from the region.

The southern end of the Barossa Valley typically experiences cooler conditions than the northern areas, which helps preserve the natural acidity and fresh fruit character in Grenache. This cooler climate allows the grapes to ripen more slowly, developing complex flavours while maintaining the bright, vibrant quality that makes this wine feel 'fresher than an early morning dip'. The location contributes to the wine's fine-boned structure rather than producing overly robust, jammy characteristics.

Six months in French oak adds subtle complexity without overwhelming the Grenache's natural fruit character. French oak is known for its fine grain and restrained influence, contributing gentle spice notes and white pepper nuances that complement the sour cherry flavours. This maturation period allows the wine to develop textural depth and integration while preserving the variety's inherent freshness and bright red fruit expression.

The wine's medium body, bright acidity, and spice notes make it incredibly versatile with food. The sour cherry and white pepper characteristics pair beautifully with Mediterranean dishes, grilled lamb, or charcuterie boards. The fine tannin structure won't overpower lighter proteins like duck or pork, while the textural, savoury elements complement herb-crusted dishes and aged cheeses perfectly.

The 2021 vintage earned a 'Killer Vintage' rating of 90 points, indicating exceptional quality for the region and variety. This vintage benefited from ideal growing conditions that allowed Grenache to express its varietal character beautifully. The combination of proper ripening conditions and the winemaker's gentle handling techniques resulted in a wine that captures the essence of what makes Barossa Grenache special - vibrant fruit, elegant structure, and compelling drinkability.
