La Camilla Barbera d'Asti DOCG Barbera 2023
La Camilla Barbera d'Asti DOCG Barbera 2023

Brooding, complex barbera - a thing of beauty

Barbera is often described as Barolo's playful cousin, but this iteration is serious business.

Barbera as a grape varietal is, by proximity, often looked at through the lens of its neighbouring nebbiolo expressions in Barolo and Barbaresco. It is in its own right, though, completely capable of producing compelling wines – case in point!

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Aromatically it is quite light and jubey - a little confected raspberry and red liquorice give way to fruit leather and candied red apple. On the palate the wine seems to morph into a true northern Italian; more robust and brash but with slatey minerality and a graphite frame. Still it is youthful and bountiful with fruit, but make no mistake, this is stuffed full of complexity and intrigue. Bursting with dark fruit and a hint of earthiness, this Italian stallion is the perfect partner to pair with a calabrese pizza and good company.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barbera d'Asti DOCG represents the pinnacle of Barbera production in Piedmont, with stricter regulations than basic Barbera d'Alba. The DOCG classification requires lower yields and longer ageing, resulting in wines with greater concentration and complexity. This La Camilla expression showcases the variety's signature high acidity balanced with the mineral-driven character that Asti's calcareous soils impart, creating that distinctive 'slatey minerality and graphite frame' mentioned in the tasting notes.

Serve this Barbera slightly below room temperature at around 16-18°C to highlight its fresh fruit character while allowing the earthy complexity to emerge. The wine's youthful exuberance and medium body make it incredibly food-friendly - it will shine with tomato-based dishes, cured meats, or aged cheeses. Consider decanting for 30 minutes if you want to soften the wine's robust, brash character and let the dark fruit flavours integrate more seamlessly.

This 2023 Barbera is deliciously approachable now, showcasing vibrant fruit and that jubey, confected character typical of young Barbera. However, the wine's underlying complexity and structure suggest it will develop beautifully over the next 5-7 years. As it ages, expect the bright raspberry and red liquorice notes to evolve into more savoury, earthy tones while the graphite minerality becomes more pronounced, creating a more integrated and sophisticated drinking experience.

Barbera's high acidity and earthy undertones make it a natural partner for rich, savoury dishes. Try it with osso buco, wild mushroom risotto, or grilled lamb with herbs - the wine's robust character won't be overwhelmed by strong flavours. The raspberry and red apple notes also complement duck breast with cherry sauce or aged balsamic-glazed pork. Its medium body and mineral backbone even work surprisingly well with mature hard cheeses like aged Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Estate Grown indicates that La Camilla controls the entire winemaking process from vineyard to bottle, ensuring consistent quality and expressing their specific terroir. This hands-on approach allows them to harvest at optimal ripeness and make stylistic decisions that reflect their vision rather than working with purchased grapes. The result is a wine that authentically represents both the Barbera variety and the unique characteristics of their Asti vineyards, contributing to the wine's complexity and the distinctive mineral-driven profile that sets it apart.
