La Camilla Barbera d'Asti DOCG 2022
La Camilla Barbera d'Asti DOCG 2022

Brooding, complex, this barbera is a thing of beauty

Barbera is often described as Barolo's playful cousin, but this expression is serious business.

Barbera as a grape varietal is, by proximity, often looked at through the lens of its neighbouring nebbiolo expressions in Barolo and Barbaresco. It is in its own right, though, completely capable of producing compelling wines – case in point!

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Aromatically it is quite light and jubey - a little confected raspberry and red liquorice give way to fruit leather and candied red apple. On the palate the wine seems to morph into a true northern Italian; more robust and brash but with slatey minerality and a graphite frame. Still it is youthful and bountiful with fruit, but make no mistake, this is stuffed full of complexity and intrigue. Bursting with dark fruit and a hint of earthiness, this Italian stallion is the perfect partner to pair with a calabrese pizza and good company.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barbera d'Asti DOCG represents one of Piedmont's most food-friendly varietals, known for its bright acidity and approachable tannins. Unlike the more austere Nebbiolo wines from the same region, Barbera offers immediate pleasure with its juicy fruit character while still maintaining the mineral backbone that defines great Piedmontese wines. The DOCG classification ensures this wine meets the highest quality standards for the appellation.

This youthful Barbera is best served slightly below room temperature, around 16-18°C, to highlight its fresh fruit character and mineral structure. The 2022 vintage is drinking beautifully now but will continue to develop complexity over the next 3-5 years. Decanting for 30 minutes will help open up the wine's earthy undertones and integrate the graphite-like tannins.

Barbera's natural acidity makes it exceptional with tomato-based dishes, which is why it pairs perfectly with calabrese pizza as mentioned. The wine's savoury and earthy notes complement aged cheeses, charcuterie, and mushroom risottos beautifully. Its medium body and mineral finish also make it an excellent match for grilled vegetables or herb-crusted lamb.

This fascinating characteristic reflects Barbera's unique personality and the winemaking style at La Camilla. The lighter, confected aromas give way to a more structured palate experience, showcasing how the variety can express both immediate fruit appeal and serious terroir-driven complexity. This transformation from nose to palate is often a hallmark of well-made Piedmontese wines that balance accessibility with depth.

The 90-point staff rating indicates this Barbera d'Asti punches well above its weight class, offering exceptional quality and complexity for the variety. Staff picks often highlight wines that represent outstanding value or unique character, suggesting this La Camilla bottling showcases the best of what modern Barbera production can achieve. The rating reflects both the wine's immediate appeal and its potential for development.
