Barbera as a grape varietal is, by proximity, often looked at through the lens of its neighbouring nebbiolo expressions in Barolo and Barbaresco. It is in its own right, though, complete capable of producing compelling wines – case in point!.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Aromatically it is quite light and jubey - a little confected raspberry and red liquorice give way to fruit leather and candied red apple. On the palate the wine seems to morph into a true northern Italian; more robust and brash but with slatey minerality and a graphite frame. Still it is youthful and bountiful with fruit, but make no mistake, this is stuffed full of complexity and intrigue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barbera d'Asti DOCG represents one of Piedmont's most food-friendly varietals, known for its bright acidity and mineral backbone. Unlike the more tannic Nebbiolo wines from the same region, Barbera offers immediate approachability while still delivering complexity. The DOCG classification ensures this wine meets strict quality standards, including lower yields and longer ageing requirements than basic Barbera wines.

Serve this Barbera d'Asti at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to showcase its mineral complexity and fruit character. The 2021 vintage is drinking beautifully now, displaying youthful exuberance while the graphite frame provides structure. Consider decanting for 30 minutes to allow the confected fruit aromas to integrate with the wine's more savoury elements.

This medium-bodied Barbera excels with traditional Piemontese cuisine like brasato al Barolo or agnolotti del plin. The wine's slatey minerality and robust character complement rich, earthy dishes, while its bright acidity cuts through fatty meats and aged cheeses. The raspberry and red liquorice notes also make it surprisingly good with tomato-based pasta dishes and grilled vegetables.

This fascinating transformation from light, jubey aromatics to a more robust palate experience is characteristic of quality Barbera. The initial confected fruit and red apple scents give way to the wine's true northern Italian character once it hits your palate, revealing the mineral terroir and structured tannins. This evolution demonstrates the wine's complexity and the influence of Piedmont's unique soil composition.

While this 2021 Barbera is delicious now with its bountiful fruit character, it has the structure to develop for 5-8 years. The graphite frame and mineral backbone suggest good ageing potential, though Barbera is generally enjoyed for its vibrant fruit rather than extended cellaring. The wine's complexity and intrigue will continue to evolve, with the confected elements integrating into more savoury, earthy characteristics over time.
