Our Aussie palates yearn for big and juicy reds. It's no secret that down at the southern end of Italy they specialise in this same style. Rich fruit, mouth-coating tannin and a long finish form a direct line between Italy and South Australia, all for the benefit of you, Mofo.

Why do we love this wine?

In the heel of the boot that is Italy (Puglia for those beholden to actual names), primitivo is arguably the leading red grape. You might already know that it’s genetically identical to zinfandel, California’s famous wine. It’s a grape that adapts well to a variety of terroirs, showing something different depending on the origin. In Puglia, primitivo tends toward rich, full-bodied and dark in fruit (think blackberries, figs and blueberries). This one from La Bollina takes that profile a bit further with some extra complexity to the tune of plum, cherry, rosemary and vanilla. It’s big, bold and luscious, making it the perfect Italian counterpart to our rich South Aussie shiraz.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Primitivo is genetically identical to California's famous Zinfandel grape - they're essentially the same variety with different names. However, Puglia's Mediterranean climate and limestone-rich soils produce a distinctly Italian expression, emphasising darker fruit flavours like blackberries and figs rather than the jammy, spicier profile typically found in Californian Zinfandels. The terroir difference showcases how the same grape can tell completely different stories depending on where it's grown.

Puglia, located in Italy's southeastern heel, offers the perfect storm of conditions for Primitivo - intense Mediterranean sunshine, warm temperatures, and mineral-rich soils that stress the vines just enough to concentrate flavours. The region's proximity to both the Adriatic and Ionian seas provides cooling breezes that help maintain acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness. This combination results in the rich, full-bodied wines with complex dark fruit characteristics that Puglia Primitivo is renowned for.

Luca Maroni is one of Italy's most respected wine critics, known for his rigorous technical analysis focusing on wine purity and absence of defects. His 98-point score indicates this La Bollina Primitivo demonstrates exceptional quality with perfect balance, intense varietal character, and flawless winemaking technique. Maroni's scoring system particularly values wines that express their terroir authentically without manipulation, suggesting this Primitivo is a pure, honest expression of Puglian winemaking at its finest.

Serve this Primitivo at 16-18°C to allow its complex aromatics of plum, cherry, and rosemary to fully express themselves while maintaining the wine's structural integrity. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help soften the tannins and integrate the vanilla notes from any oak influence. The wine's bold, luscious character makes it perfect alongside rich dishes like osso buco, aged cheeses, or grilled lamb where its savoury earthiness can complement rather than compete with the food.

The 2021 vintage represents Primitivo at an ideal drinking window - mature enough to have developed secondary flavours like the noted rosemary and vanilla complexity, yet still retaining vibrant primary fruit characteristics. Primitivo typically reaches its peak 3-5 years after vintage, meaning this wine has had sufficient time to integrate its components while maintaining the fresh blackberry and fig notes that define quality Puglian expressions. The vintage also benefits from excellent growing conditions in southern Italy during 2021.
