Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Sounds like a superhero origin story, I know. But it’s really the tale of a very traditional wine region doing something entirely unconventional. And it worked a charm. This one is half sangio and a quarter each cab and merlot. It’s given six months in older oak to build structure yet still let the fruit sing. Look for cherries, raspberries, chocolate and a touch of vanillin. And at this price with a 98 point review, this is a Supertuscan at a super deal!

Frequently Asked Questions

Supertuscans are Tuscan wines that break traditional Italian winemaking rules by using international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot alongside or instead of native Sangiovese. This Erastos exemplifies the style perfectly with its blend of 50% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 25% Merlot. The movement began in the 1970s when innovative producers wanted to create premium wines outside Italy's strict classification system, often achieving remarkable quality that rivals Bordeaux.

The six months in older oak barrels is a deliberate choice that builds structural complexity without overwhelming the fruit expression. Older oak imparts subtle vanilla and spice notes while allowing the wine's natural cherry and raspberry flavours to remain prominent. This approach creates better integration between the wood and fruit compared to new oak, which can dominate younger wines. The result is a more harmonious wine where the oak supports rather than masks the blend's inherent character.

A 98-point score from Luca Maroni places this wine in exceptional company, typically reserved for wines costing significantly more. Maroni is known for his rigorous technical analysis of Italian wines, focusing on balance, complexity, and ageing potential. For a Supertuscan at this price point to achieve such recognition suggests exceptional winemaking skill and outstanding vintage conditions. This rating indicates the wine can compete with premium Tuscan estates that often charge double or triple the price.

The wine's cherry and raspberry fruit, supported by leather and vanilla notes, makes it incredibly versatile with food. Classic pairings include grilled lamb, beef ragu with pasta, or aged hard cheeses like Pecorino Toscano. The medium body and balanced tannins also complement roasted vegetables, mushroom risotto, or even duck breast. The Sangiovese component provides the acidity needed to cut through rich sauces, while the Cabernet and Merlot add structure for heartier proteins.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C to showcase its complex aromatics and balanced structure - slightly cooler than room temperature brings out the fruit clarity. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help integrate the flavours and soften any remaining tannins. The 2019 vintage is drinking beautifully now but has the structure to cellar for another 5-8 years, during which the leather and earthy notes will develop further. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place away from temperature fluctuations.
