Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

We can’t get enough of the primitivo that Bollina produces in Italy. This one has a crazy 98-point score from Luca Maroni and hails from Manduria, a little region in the heel of the boot that is known for the variety. The fruit is hand harvested and done a bit late in order to increase concentration, power and richness. There’s blackberry, cherry and plum with a backbone of tobacco, mocha and cocoa. This isn’t wine for the faint of heart, but rather for those that want something dense and dark in the glass.

The dark purple, almost black color of the wine announces all the power of the primitivo grape variety. The intense spectacle continues in the bouquet. Aromas of wild blackberry and ripe plum combine with complex notes of tobacco and raisin. It immediately makes your mouth water! And rightly so, because the primitivo shows what it is capable of on the palate: the silky and smooth tannins perfectly complement the dynamic fruity dimension. Throughout the tasting, nuances of cocoa, as well as discreet hints of leather and pepper, appear. A masterpiece of Italian viticulture!

Frequently Asked Questions

This Primitivo comes from Manduria in Puglia's heel, where the variety reaches its most concentrated expression due to the hot, dry climate. The late harvest technique used here allows the grapes to develop extraordinary sugar levels and phenolic compounds, resulting in the dense, almost port-like character that earned it a remarkable 98-point score. Unlike lighter Italian reds, this wine showcases Primitivo's relationship to Zinfandel with its bold, jammy fruit profile.

Serve this powerful Primitivo at 16-18°C to allow its complex layers of blackberry, tobacco, and cocoa to unfold properly. The wine's intensity demands equally robust food pairings like grilled lamb, aged cheeses, or rich pasta dishes with meat sauces. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help soften the tannins and integrate the bold flavours, making this 'wine for the brave' more approachable.

Luca Maroni is Italy's most influential wine critic, known for his scientific approach to tasting and focus on technical excellence. A 98-point score from Maroni indicates exceptional quality and places this wine among Italy's elite bottlings. Maroni particularly values wines that express their terroir authentically while maintaining perfect balance, making this score especially significant for a Primitivo from the traditional Manduria region.

While this 2021 Primitivo is approachable now, its full-bodied structure and concentrated fruit suggest excellent aging potential of 8-12 years. The wine's backbone of tobacco and mocha notes will develop further complexity over time, while the intense fruit flavours will integrate and become more nuanced. Store it in a cool, dark place if you want to experience how this powerful wine evolves.

Manduria sits in Puglia's Salento peninsula, where ancient red soils and intense Mediterranean heat create ideal conditions for Primitivo. The region's limestone-rich terrain and minimal rainfall force vines to develop deep root systems, concentrating flavours in the grapes. This terroir, combined with traditional late-harvest techniques, produces Primitivos with exceptional depth and power that can't be replicated elsewhere in Italy.
