Why do we love this wine?

Using only estate fruit sourced from their small 9 hectares of vineyard, this producer is known for some phenomenal Barolo along with several other celebrated styles of wine from Piemonte. 'Riccinnebbia' translates directly as ‘curly fog’ in English. This references the autumnal fog that often curls over the Langhe region during the annual grape harvest. The wine is of course 100% nebbiolo, hand harvested and laid to rest in a variety of oak barrels for periods of 10-16 months depending on the vessel. It’s rather full in body for nebbiolo with a floral nose and delicate red fruits on the palate. The finish is dry but there’s a hint of fruit sweetness (not sugar) that provides lift and makes the wine enjoyable on its own or with gamier meats and charcuterie.

Frequently Asked Questions

Riccinnebbia translates to 'curly fog' in English, referencing the distinctive autumnal fog that rolls through the Langhe region during harvest time. This atmospheric phenomenon is crucial for nebbiolo grapes, as the morning fog helps maintain acidity while afternoon sunshine develops flavour complexity. The name beautifully captures the terroir's influence on this wine's character.

While both are made from nebbiolo grapes, this Langhe Nebbiolo offers a more approachable style compared to the structured power of Barolo. The shorter oak ageing (10-16 months versus Barolo's minimum 38 months) and Langhe DOC regulations allow for earlier drinking pleasure. You'll find the same floral aromatics and red fruit character but with softer tannins and immediate accessibility.

Nebbiolo is typically known for producing elegant, lighter-bodied wines despite its powerful tannin structure. This wine's fuller body likely results from La Biòca's meticulous vineyard management across their compact 9 hectares and careful barrel selection during the 10-16 month ageing process. The concentrated estate fruit and varied oak vessels contribute to a more substantial mouthfeel while maintaining nebbiolo's characteristic finesse.

The wine's dry finish with subtle fruit sweetness makes it versatile for both solo sipping and food pairing. Game meats like venison or wild boar complement nebbiolo's earthy undertones, while charcuterie boards highlight the wine's spice notes and cherry flavours. The floral aromatics also pair beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, a classic Piemontese combination that echoes the wine's regional heritage.

This 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo is designed for earlier enjoyment compared to its Barolo siblings, making it perfect for current consumption. The balanced oak treatment and approachable tannin structure mean it's already showing beautifully, though nebbiolo's natural structure will allow it to develop additional complexity over the next 5-8 years. The choice between immediate pleasure and patient cellaring depends on your preference for fresh fruit versus evolved tertiary flavours.
