La Biòca is located in the village of Serralunga d’Alba, surrounded by rolling vineyards planted to the traditional varieties of the Langhe. They use only estate fruit sourced from their small 9 hectares of vineyard to produce world-renowned Barolo along with several other celebrated styles of wine from Piemonte.

Why do we love this wine?

We first imported the 2016 vintage of this wine, one that was awarded the Best in Show Barolo from the Decanter World Wine Awards. When we found out we could get our hands on the future vintages, we were ecstatic! While the 2016 Barolo’s were quite approachable after only a few years, the 2018’s are looking to be in it for the long haul. This one’s for ageing, mofo: full of drive and tannin in its youth, this will open up beautifully in a couple of years. James Suckling’s review below further paints the picture of a wine with a long, fruitful life.

Cherries, nuts and hints of ash on the nose. Some bright, cedary oak, too. Full-to medium-bodied, with a caramelly tinge to the oak as the palate progresses. The tannins are firm, but starting to sink in. Structured, but there’s quite a raw feel to the finish, so give it time to settle in.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2018 vintage shows more concentrated tannins and structural backbone compared to the more approachable 2016, which won Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards. This vintage reflects the classic Barolo profile where patience is rewarded - the intense tannins will gradually soften and integrate, allowing the wine's complexity to unfold over the next decade. The 2018's youthful power suggests it will develop into something truly exceptional with proper cellaring.

Nebbiolo is often called the 'king of Italian wines' because it combines power with elegance in a way few varietals can match. In Barolo DOCG, the grape develops intense aromatics of roses and tar alongside structured tannins that can age for decades. The DOCG classification ensures strict quality standards, including minimum ageing requirements that help develop the wine's characteristic complexity of plum and spice flavours.

Decant this Barolo at least 2-3 hours before serving to allow the tight tannins to soften and the aromatics to open up. Serve at 16-18°C in large Burgundy glasses to concentrate the complex bouquet. Given its textured, savoury profile with plum and spice notes, pair it with rich dishes like braised beef, aged cheeses, or truffle-based pasta to complement its intensity.

This classification likely refers to the wine's current drinking style rather than its ultimate potential - young Barolos can seem deceptively light despite their powerful tannin structure. The 'light-bodied' descriptor probably reflects the wine's current tight, closed character before it fully develops. As this 2018 ages, expect it to gain weight and richness, transforming into the full-bodied powerhouse that Barolo is renowned for.

A 90-point score from Italian Import places this Barolo in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality and ageing potential. This rating is particularly significant for a young vintage that hasn't yet reached its peak, suggesting the wine shows remarkable promise even in its current state. Combined with La Biòca's track record of producing award-winning Barolos, this score validates the wine's potential to develop into something truly special over the coming years.
