Why do we love this wine?

Kopke are one of the major Port players, with a history dating back to 1638, with some barrels over 100 years old. This fine-looking number has an average age of 10 years, meaning you get the best of both worlds blended together: younguns with pure vibrancy meet ancient, wisdom-inducing old Ports that bring intensity around the edges. So that vibrant fruitiness fills the mid-palate while it stretches out to a long sweet, salty, umami-lined finish. Perfect for Christmas pudding, every cheese imaginable, or just the end of the night on the good couch.

An exuberant, delicious taste sensation of nuts, peanut brittle, red fruits with cream and Christmas cake, underpinned with an iodine edge. Soft and silky.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 10-year age statement represents an average across the blend, creating a sophisticated marriage of youthful vibrancy and mature complexity. Unlike younger Tawnies that can be one-dimensional, this extended ageing in old oak barrels allows the wine to develop layers of nutty, caramelised flavours while retaining fresh fruit character. The result is a Port with both immediate appeal and the depth that comes from slow oxidative ageing in Porto's cellars.

Serve this Tawny Port slightly chilled at around 12-16°C in a small wine glass to concentrate the aromas. Unlike Vintage Port, Tawny is ready to drink immediately and won't improve with further cellaring - it's already been aged to perfection in barrel. Once opened, it will stay fresh for several weeks if stored upright in the fridge, making it perfect for enjoying over multiple occasions.

The rich sweetness and nutty complexity make this Tawny Port incredibly versatile with desserts and cheese. It's a classic match for Christmas pudding, where the dried fruit flavours echo beautifully, and works brilliantly with aged hard cheeses like Stilton or aged Cheddar. The honey and dried apricot notes also complement crème brûlée, tarte tatin, or even dark chocolate desserts with nuts.

Founded in 1638, Kopke is one of Portugal's oldest Port houses with nearly four centuries of winemaking expertise. Their cellars contain barrels over 100 years old, which contribute to the complexity and character of their aged Tawnies through fractional blending systems. This deep heritage, combined with their consistent award-winning quality (including multiple 95-point Decanter scores), establishes them as a benchmark producer in the Douro Valley.

Tawny Port differs from Ruby Port through extended barrel ageing, which creates oxidative flavours and a lighter, more amber colour compared to Ruby's deep red hue. Unlike Sherry, which uses solera systems, Tawny Port employs fractional blending of different aged components. The fortification process stops fermentation early, preserving natural sweetness while achieving higher alcohol, creating a style that's less cloying than many dessert wines but richer than table wines.
