Grenache is having it's time in the sun, and we're here for it. Especially when we're talking about the aged, old vine, barossa type.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

If you haven't already caught on, Barossa has some seriously old vines (some of the world's oldest in fact). Those vines sit under the ownership of some equally old wineries, such as Kaesler. It sits perfectly in between medium and full-bodied, with black cherry, kirsch, cinammon and clove notes in plentiful supply. You could even give this a light chill to draw out the red fruited characters that make this wine so more-ish. Pleasure awaits in this glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Barossa Valley is home to some of the world's oldest Grenache vines, many planted in the 1800s by German settlers. These ancient vines produce incredibly concentrated fruit with complex flavour profiles that younger plantings simply cannot match. The region's warm, dry climate and diverse soil types create ideal conditions for Grenache to develop the rich, spicy characteristics that make Barossa examples so distinctive and sought-after globally.

Yes, a light chill (around 14-16°C) can be brilliant for this style of Grenache, especially in warmer weather. Cooling the wine slightly enhances the red fruit characters like raspberry and cherry while taming any alcohol heat, making it more refreshing and food-friendly. This technique works particularly well with medium to full-bodied reds that have good acidity and bright fruit flavours, transforming them into versatile food wines.

Old vines naturally produce lower yields but dramatically higher quality fruit with more concentrated flavours and complex aromatics. These mature root systems access deeper soil layers and minerals, while the vines' age brings natural balance and intensity that cannot be replicated in younger plantings. The result is wine with greater depth, more nuanced spice notes like cinnamon and clove, and superior aging potential compared to fruit from younger vines.

Quality Barossa Grenache from established producers like Kaesler typically peaks between 5-10 years from vintage, meaning this 2017 is entering its prime drinking window now. The wine's full-bodied structure and old vine concentration suggest it will continue developing complexity through 2027-2030. Store it in a cool, dark place and expect the primary fruit flavours to evolve into more savoury, earthy characteristics with leather and spice becoming more prominent.

This wine's textured, savoury profile makes it exceptional with grilled meats, particularly lamb with herbs or beef with pepper crusts. The wine's spice notes complement Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines beautifully, while its full body can handle rich stews and braised dishes. The berry fruit characters also pair wonderfully with game meats like venison or duck, where the wine's earthiness complements the meat's natural flavours.
