On the charges of being opulent and indulgent, we find this wine guilty. Slick and silky, guilty. Concentrated and complex, guilty. Downright delicious, guilty. We sentence the Judge Rock Your Honour to be consumed immediately, or serve 5-10 years in the cellar of any pinot noir enthusiast.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This lot don't muck around, they know what Central Otago is for, growing pinot noir. They don't bother with other varieties and put their sole focus on creating certified organic, pristine pinot - and they're seriously good at it. Everything you'd expect from the region and more, the already dense and concentrated fruit is amplified by 11 months in French oak barrels and 18 months in bottle. A wine that speaks to the time and place in which it was created. Say 'kia ora' to your new favourite Kiwi pinot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Central Otago's continental climate with hot days and cool nights creates perfect conditions for Pinot Noir, allowing the grapes to develop intense flavours while retaining natural acidity. The region's schist soils and high altitude vineyards contribute to the concentrated fruit character evident in this Judge Rock wine. This terroir produces Pinot Noirs with exceptional depth and complexity that rival the best Burgundian examples.

The extended French oak maturation adds structural complexity and subtle vanilla notes without overwhelming the delicate Pinot Noir fruit. French oak is preferred for premium Pinot Noir because it imparts more refined tannins and allows the wine's natural cherry and cranberry flavours to shine through. The additional 18 months bottle aging further integrates these oak influences, creating a harmonious wine that balances fruit purity with sophisticated oak complexity.

Pinot Noir naturally produces lighter-bodied wines due to its thin skins and lower tannin levels compared to varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon. However, 'light-bodied' doesn't mean lacking in flavour - this Judge Rock wine demonstrates how concentrated fruit and careful winemaking can create intensity within an elegant, refined structure. The apple, cranberry, and sour cherry notes provide complexity without heaviness, making it food-friendly and approachable.

A 96-point score from a Master Sommelier represents exceptional quality, placing this wine in the top tier of New Zealand Pinot Noirs. Cameron Douglas MS is a highly respected wine critic, and such high scores indicate outstanding balance, complexity, and aging potential. Combined with the Five Stars from Wine Orbit, these ratings confirm this is a premium example that showcases both Judge Rock's winemaking expertise and Central Otago's terroir.

Certified organic viticulture means no synthetic pesticides or fertilisers were used, allowing the vineyard's natural terroir to express itself more purely in the wine. Organic practices often result in lower yields but more concentrated flavours, which aligns with the intense fruit character described in this Pinot Noir. The focus on soil health and biodiversity in organic vineyards can contribute to greater complexity and a more authentic expression of Central Otago's unique growing conditions.
