Yep, you read that right, Willowlake. Not A Willowlake, this is THE Willowlake. The most recognisable and potentially the most sought-after vineyard in the Yarra, if not Victoria.

Why do we love this wine?

There's an age old adage in winemaking; high-quality fruit makes high-quality wine. Well Mofo, this is very high quality fruit. One of the only commercial vineyards with a genuinely recognisable name and punters and winemakers alike have been lining up to get there hands on this very high quality fruit. Now it's your turn.
Concentrated red and dark fruit, regional spice, a good lick of French oak and enduring natural acid. That was the starting point, now with nearly 10 years in the rearview mirror this wine has become a whole new (beautiful) beast. Earthiness, savoury oak-spice, and smooth, rich complex fruit build to a sustained and exceptionally elegant finish. Very classy stuff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Willowlake is one of the few commercial vineyards with genuine name recognition among both winemakers and wine enthusiasts. Its reputation stems from consistently producing exceptional fruit quality that attracts industry professionals who queue up to access these grapes. The vineyard's prestige in the Yarra Valley reflects its ideal terroir and meticulous viticulture practices that create the foundation for premium Pinot Noir.

After nearly a decade in bottle, this wine has transformed from its youthful concentrated red and dark fruit character into something far more complex and sophisticated. The primary fruit flavours have developed into earthy, savoury notes while the French oak has integrated beautifully, creating smooth, rich layers. This evolution demonstrates Pinot Noir's remarkable ability to develop tertiary characteristics that add depth and elegance over time.

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soil types create perfect conditions for Pinot Noir, allowing the variety to maintain its natural acidity while developing complex flavour profiles. The region's temperature variations and elevation changes provide the stress that Pinot Noir needs to concentrate flavours while preserving the elegance and finesse that defines great examples. This terroir influence is clearly expressed in the wine's regional spice characteristics and sustained finish.

Light body in Pinot Noir doesn't mean lack of complexity - it refers to the wine's elegant structure and refined tannins rather than heavy extraction. This style allows the intricate flavours of wild berries, mushroom, and spice to shine through without being masked by excessive weight. The light-bodied approach showcases Pinot Noir's transparency to terroir and demonstrates the winemaker's restraint in creating a wine that prioritises finesse over power.

The wine's evolved earthy and savoury characteristics make it perfect for dishes featuring mushrooms, duck, or game birds where the umami flavours will harmonise beautifully. The sustained natural acidity and elegant finish also pair excellently with salmon or other rich fish preparations. Consider serving with aged cheeses or herb-crusted lamb where the wine's complexity can match the dish's sophistication without overwhelming delicate flavours.
