This is Houghton’s flagship wine - a powerful, age-worthy cabernet from a tiny parcel of old vines in Frankland River. Intense black fruit, bay leaf, tobacco and wild mint poke through a dense, structured palate with impeccable balance. Named for the man who made 51 vintages here. Respect.

Why do we love this wine?

When a wine carries the name Jack Mann, it has a lot to live up to. This is Houghton’s flagship cabernet, and one of the greatest wines of Western Australia - with a 97 point Halliday review to prove it. Made from a handful of rows on the revered 'Justin' Vineyard in Frankland River, planted back in 1971 - this is serious single-vineyard stuff - the selection process is nothing short of ruthless. Only the best fruit makes it through. It’s rich, layered and commanding. Blackcurrant, blackberry and dark chocolate dominate, with savoury tones of black olive, bay leaf and wild herbs adding depth. The tannins are firm and fine, the oak beautifully interwoven, and the finish is long, detailed and built to last. It’s dense and powerful, no doubt, but the elegance, balance and polish are what make it special.

The cabernet shape of the bottle is normal, its weight heavier – appropriate for Jack Mann's belief that no wine was worth its gold unless it could be diluted with 50% water and still enjoyed. This is pure cabernet sauvignon, from a deep well of blackcurrant and black olive fruit, and tannins to make sure the wine outlives you.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 'Justin' Vineyard in Frankland River was planted in 1971, making these vines over 50 years old - a significant age that contributes to fruit concentration and complexity. Frankland River's cool climate and ancient soils provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, allowing for slow ripening that develops the wine's characteristic depth and structure. The ruthless selection process means only a handful of rows from this revered site make it into the final blend, ensuring exceptional quality.

With its firm tannin structure and 97-point rating, this wine is built for long-term cellaring of 15-20 years or more. As it ages, the primary blackcurrant and blackberry flavours will evolve into more complex tertiary notes like leather, tobacco, and cedar. The tannins will soften and integrate, while the savoury elements of black olive and herbs will become more pronounced, creating a wine of remarkable depth and sophistication.

The combination of exceptional terroir, meticulous winemaking, and perfect vintage conditions in 2019 has created something truly special. James Halliday's 97-point score reflects the wine's rare balance of power and elegance - it's dense and commanding yet maintains finesse and polish. The integration of oak, the precision of fruit selection, and the wine's ability to express both varietal character and regional identity make it a standout example of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon.

This wine's rich tannin structure and savoury complexity make it perfect for red meat dishes, particularly aged beef or lamb with herbs. The black olive and bay leaf notes complement Mediterranean-style preparations, while the wine's power can stand up to strong cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese. Game meats like venison or duck also pair beautifully, as the wine's earthy undertones echo the gamey flavours.

This wine represents the pinnacle of Western Australian Cabernet Sauvignon, showcasing the unique characteristics of Frankland River's terroir. Unlike the more opulent styles from warmer regions, this wine displays restraint and elegance alongside its power. The single-vineyard approach and rigorous selection process place it among Australia's most prestigious Cabernets, competing with icons from Margaret River and Coonawarra while maintaining its own distinctive regional character.
