Unapologetically bold, unarguably elegant, unquestionably delicious. Australia's answer to the 'Super Tuscan', a 'Super Barossan', if you like. A powerful but pretty wine that'll change the way we think of Barossan red blends.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Tried, tasted and approved by punters (4.1 Vivino) this is a unique blend of cabernet sauvignon, montepulciano and bonvedro, split 33% each. The star of the show is (rightfully) cabernet bringing cassis, black currants and a bit of grunt. The monte and the bonvedro, although less immediately discernible, play a vital role in bringing perfume, structure and bright aromatics to this enticing beauty. A good lick of French oak rounds out the wine and creates a long, smooth finish. The three varieties work in perfect harmony to create a wine that feels as oddly familiar as it does new and exciting.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine features an unusual three-way split of cabernet sauvignon, montepulciano, and bonvedro at 33% each - a departure from typical Aussie blends that heavily favour cabernet or shiraz. The inclusion of montepulciano (Italian heritage) and bonvedro (a rare Portuguese variety) creates an international fusion that's quite uncommon in the Barossa Valley. This blend showcases how modern Australian winemakers are experimenting beyond traditional varietals to create distinctive flavour profiles.

The Barossa's warm continental climate and ancient soils provide ideal conditions for ripening the cabernet sauvignon component, which delivers the wine's backbone of cassis and black currant flavours. The region's expertise with full-bodied reds helps balance the international varietals, while the use of French oak - a Barossa hallmark - adds structure and creates the wine's signature smooth finish. This terroir allows each variety to contribute meaningfully rather than being overshadowed.

The wine's rich cassis and black currant notes from cabernet sauvignon pair beautifully with grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef steaks. The montepulciano's bright aromatics complement Italian-inspired dishes like osso buco or aged hard cheeses, while the bonvedro's structural contribution makes it excellent with game meats or hearty stews. The French oak integration means it can handle bold flavours without being overwhelmed.

At three years old, this 2021 vintage is drinking beautifully now, with the French oak well-integrated and the three varietals harmoniously balanced. The full-bodied structure and quality fruit suggest it could develop further complexity over the next 3-5 years, particularly as the montepulciano and bonvedro components continue to evolve. However, given its current harmony and the 4.1 Vivino rating reflecting immediate appeal, there's no need to wait if you're eager to experience this unique blend.

Montepulciano, Italy's workhorse grape, contributes perfume and bright aromatics that lift the wine's overall profile beyond typical cabernet heaviness. Bonvedro, a rare Portuguese variety, adds structural complexity and subtle spice notes that create intrigue on the palate. While these varietals may not dominate the flavour profile like the cabernet sauvignon, they work as supporting players that prevent the wine from being one-dimensional, creating what the winemaker describes as feeling 'oddly familiar yet new and exciting.'
