Why do we love this wine?

"I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon with the team at Herencia Altes a couple of years back, and I was in awe of their ethos and their commitment to making bloody epic wines. Over a lunch, with all of their range on offer and a bowl of Salmorejo in front of me- I chose the ‘La Pilosa’ to whisk away the afternoon with. Terra Alta is a region all about Grenache (or Garnatxa as it’s called in Catalan), and this wine is all about its native clone, ‘Garnatxa Peluda’ which translates to ‘hairy grenache’. A wine with great finesse, with an abundance of thyme and rosemary wafting along the midline; mulberry, blackberry and slate coming right to the forefront. Genuinely stunning, completely unique. You won’t know what you’re missing until you try it." - Tully, Vinomofo Wine buyer

Joyous aromas of Alpine herbs, flowers and tart red fruit which entice and inspire. Shining with freshness on the palate with a rewardingly fragrant finish.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"The Garnacha Peluda (Hairy Garnacha) red 2022 La Pilosa was produced with a biotype thas has more vigor and less color than the regular Garnacha, and they want to highlight the lightness and freshness of the variety. It comes from a vineyard planted in 2016 on clay and limestone soils that is head-pruned and dry-farmed. It fermented with 40% full clusters in concrete with native yeasts and underwent malolactic and aging for 10 months in 5,000 liter Austrian foudres. It’s perfumed, with ripe berry fruit and herbs and has some earthy and dusty notes, with a rustic twist and hints of tree bark, closer to Cariñena than to regular Garnacha. It also has some dusty tannins and earthy minerality. It has 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.65 and 4.9 grams of acidity. 25,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in Febrary 2024." - Luis Gutiérrez

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the native 'Garnatxa Peluda' (hairy Grenache) clone from Terra Alta, which develops completely different characteristics than the warmer-climate Australian Grenache most are familiar with. The Mediterranean continental climate and slate soils of Terra Alta produce a more mineral-driven, herbaceous expression with distinctive thyme and rosemary notes. While Australian Grenache tends towards jammy fruit and warmth, this Spanish version offers greater finesse and savoury complexity.

Terra Alta, meaning 'high land' in Catalan, sits at higher altitudes in Catalonia where Grenache has been cultivated for centuries using traditional methods. The region's unique terroir combines slate soils with a continental Mediterranean climate, creating ideal conditions for the native Garnatxa Peluda clone to express its full potential. This results in wines with exceptional mineral backbone and aromatic complexity that reflect the ancient winemaking heritage of the area.

Garnatxa Peluda translates to 'hairy Grenache' in Catalan, referring to the fuzzy underside of the grape leaves on this native Spanish clone. This particular clone produces smaller berries with thicker skins, resulting in wines with greater concentration and more complex tannin structure. The clone's adaptation to Terra Alta's specific conditions over generations contributes to the wine's distinctive herbal aromatics and mineral-driven character that sets it apart from international Grenache plantings.

Serve this wine slightly below room temperature (around 16-18°C) to highlight its aromatic complexity and prevent the alcohol from overwhelming the delicate herbal notes. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help integrate the full-bodied structure and allow the distinctive thyme and rosemary aromatics to fully develop. The wine's savoury, textured profile makes it perfect for Mediterranean cuisine, grilled meats, or aged cheeses that complement its mineral-driven character.

The 95-point Decanter World Wine Awards score and inclusion in Miquel Hudin's Top 100 Wines of Spain 2023 highlight this as an exceptional example of modern Spanish winemaking. These accolades from respected international critics demonstrate that Herència Altés has successfully elevated a traditional regional variety to world-class standards. The organic certification adds another layer of quality assurance, showing the producer's commitment to sustainable practices that enhance terroir expression.
