Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

The purity and vibrancy of this is what stands out first and foremost - an inky, deep crimson with a glossy sheen. The fruit follows suit - lively, distinct, powerful, promising of years to come - though aged, there's an element that feels like it was plucked off the vine this morning. The weight of the fruit goes on a little longer than expected which, as far as surprises go, that's a very welcome one. Tannin structure is mellow now, but I can see that once upon a time it would have formed quite an imposing frame around this dense fruit profile. This wine is, in a word, brilliant. I would love to see what it looks like in 15, maybe 20 years - but the reliable window is within the next five. Still though, if you fancy chancing your arm, it might be worth a punt...

Excellent purple-red; a mix of blackberry and black cherry aromas lead into a medium- to full-bodied palate; the structure is more evident than on the Hill of Grace (but, then, the wine is 2 years younger); with hints of bitter chocolate, the palate moves decisively to the blackberry spectrum, the screwcap guaranteeing a very long life; 90-year-old ungrafted vines.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2004 vintage represents Mount Edelstone at its peak maturity, showcasing the remarkable ageability that defines premium Eden Valley Shiraz. Despite being nearly two decades old, it retains vibrant fruit character while developing the complex secondary flavours that only emerge through proper cellaring. The exceptional ratings of 97 points from Wine Front and 95 points from James Halliday reflect how this vintage perfectly balances power with elegance, demonstrating why Mount Edelstone is considered one of Australia's most prestigious single-vineyard Shiraz expressions.

Eden Valley's high altitude and cool climate create ideal conditions for Shiraz to develop both intensity and finesse, resulting in the distinctive pepper and plum profile. The region's significant diurnal temperature variation allows the grapes to retain natural acidity while developing concentrated flavours, with cool nights preserving the spicy pepper notes that are characteristic of cool-climate Shiraz. The warm days ensure full phenolic ripeness, creating the rich plum fruit that provides the wine's backbone, while the extended growing season allows for complex flavour development that has continued to evolve beautifully over the past 20 years.

The tannin evolution in this 2004 Mount Edelstone demonstrates the hallmark of exceptional winemaking and terroir expression. Originally imposing and structured, the tannins have mellowed into a silky framework that supports rather than dominates the fruit, allowing the wine's inherent power to shine through with elegance. This transformation is characteristic of premium Eden Valley Shiraz, where high-quality fruit and careful extraction create tannins that integrate seamlessly over time. The current mellow structure suggests the wine has reached its optimal drinking window while retaining enough backbone to continue developing for several more years.

This 2004 Mount Edelstone is currently in its prime drinking window, offering the perfect balance between youthful vibrancy and mature complexity. The wine shows remarkable freshness despite its age, with fruit that feels almost newly picked while displaying the sophisticated secondary characteristics that only develop through proper ageing. While it will continue to evolve beautifully over the next five years, drinking it now allows you to experience the wine at its peak integration. For the adventurous collector, it may reward further cellaring for 15-20 years, though this would be entering uncharted territory for most drinkers.

This powerful Mount Edelstone requires careful handling to showcase its complexity and depth. Serve at 16-18°C after decanting for at least an hour to allow the concentrated flavours to open and the mellow tannins to integrate fully with the vibrant fruit. The wine's full-bodied nature and rich plum character make it an ideal match for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb, aged beef, or game meats that can stand up to its intensity. Given its 20-year development, consider pairing with mature cheeses or dishes featuring earthy elements that complement the wine's evolved complexity while respecting its Eden Valley terroir.
