Why do we love this wine?

Haselgrove has crafted this South Aussie shiraz with a blend of fruit from McLaren and Padthaway - two regions famous for their wonderful reds. And wonderful indeed it is...Haselgrove made this for an export market that fell though - we were quite chuffed when they called us to see if we’d want it. A full-bodied wine, leaning towards the more savoury side, it’s still full of bright red fruit, spice and soft smooth tannins. It’s drinking well now, but will improve over the next year or so.

Frequently Asked Questions

This shiraz showcases the art of regional blending, combining fruit from McLaren Vale's warm Mediterranean climate with Padthaway's cooler continental conditions. The result is a wine that balances McLaren Vale's rich, chocolatey intensity with Padthaway's elegant structure and spice. This dual-region approach creates more complexity than single-vineyard wines, offering both power and finesse in the same bottle.

The savoury character comes from the wine's terroir and winemaking approach, where earthy, spicy elements take precedence over jammy fruit flavours. This style reflects the cooler Padthaway influence and likely includes whole bunch fermentation or extended skin contact. Savoury shiraz pairs exceptionally well with grilled meats and hearty stews, as the earthy tannins complement rather than compete with rich, umami-driven dishes.

While this shiraz is drinking beautifully now, it's positioned in that sweet spot where short-term cellaring will reward patience. The next 1-2 years will see the tannins integrate further and the savoury complexity deepen. Given it's a full-bodied wine with good structure, it could easily develop for 3-5 years total, though the bright fruit character suggests it's designed for earlier enjoyment rather than long-term aging.

James Halliday's Five Red Star rating represents the pinnacle of Australian winery recognition, awarded to fewer than 100 wineries nationwide. This rating reflects consistent excellence across a producer's entire range, not just individual wines. For Haselgrove to achieve this status means their winemaking standards are among Australia's elite, making this shiraz a representation of truly premium Australian wine craftsmanship.

The wine's savoury profile and allspice notes make it perfect for dishes with earthy, umami-rich flavours like mushroom risotto, lamb with rosemary, or aged hard cheeses. The blackberry and plum fruit provides enough sweetness to balance spicy cuisines, while the full body stands up to rich, slow-cooked dishes. Avoid delicate seafood or light salads, as this wine's intensity would overpower subtle flavours.
