This isn't just Barossa GSM - this is Moppa GSM. This humble Barossa sub-region has been pumping out belters like this one for years, and it seems like the wine world is only just catching on. Ken Gargett calls this a "flavour bomb for sure, but a terrific one" with impressive length finishing on silky tannins. We're completely obsessed with this wine - you will be too!

Why do we love this wine?

Sam Kim awarded this gorgeous little wine 95 points, calling it "wonderfully ripe and fragrant" with dark berry, violet, mixed spice and roasted hazelnut aromatics leading to splendidly weighted palate offering succulent fruit with fleshy texture and fine-grained tannins. Silky, generous, with a lengthy velvety finish. Bright crimson with magenta hue catches the eye before fragrant dark cherry and musk plum fruit heightened by floral nuances and warm spice draw you in. Subtle but present oak in the creamy spectrum allows fruit fragrance to dominate. A bright glossy core of juicy dark cherry fills the palate with appetising length, fine powdery tannins building textural interest and gentle acidity knitting everything together with impeccable balance.

Frequently Asked Questions

GSM stands for Grenache, Syrah (Shiraz), and Mourvèdre - a classic Mediterranean blend that originated in France's Rhône Valley. This combination creates wines with exceptional complexity, where Grenache provides bright fruit and elegance, Shiraz adds structure and spice, and Mourvèdre contributes earthy depth and tannins. The Barossa Valley's warm climate is perfectly suited to these varietals, producing GSM blends that rival the world's best.

Sam Kim from Wine Orbit awarded 95 points because this GSM demonstrates exceptional balance and complexity that's rare at this price point. The wine showcases textbook GSM characteristics with its fragrant dark fruit, floral nuances, and seamless integration of oak, fruit, and tannins. The lengthy finish and impeccable balance indicate a wine that's both immediately enjoyable and built for cellaring, representing outstanding value from boutique producer Arila Gardens.

Serve this medium-bodied red at 16-18°C to showcase its fragrant aromatics and silky texture. The wine's dark cherry and spice profile makes it perfect with grilled lamb, beef, or game meats, while its balanced acidity complements Mediterranean dishes with herbs and tomatoes. The fine-grained tannins and generous fruit also pair beautifully with aged cheeses and charcuterie boards.

Arila Gardens is recognised as both a boutique producer and a 'Mofo Fave', indicating they're a small-scale winery that consistently produces exceptional wines. Being based in the prestigious Barossa Valley, they have access to some of Australia's finest vineyard sites, particularly in the Moppa sub-region known for its ancient soils and ideal microclimate. Their focus on quality over quantity allows them to craft wines that punch well above their weight class.

This 2022 GSM is beautifully balanced and drinking superbly now, with its silky texture and generous fruit making it immediately approachable. However, the fine-grained tannin structure and excellent acidity suggest it will develop additional complexity over the next 5-8 years. The wine's bright crimson colour and vibrant fruit indicate it's in its prime drinking window, though patient cellaring will reward you with more integrated flavours and enhanced tertiary characteristics.
