Why do we love this wine?

When we get wines like these to our lips, it’s a hallelujah kind of moment. These are markers of history, and set out to tell their story. While we can’t reveal more details, this wine comes off one of the most historically significant blocks in the Adelaide region. Sitting at 115 years old, these vines have truly seen it all. Mostly grenache, with just a touch of shiraz for that lovely peppery seasoning. It’s deep and brooding, with some very subtly integrated notes of oak. Red fruits and plums come to the forefront, as the herbaceous notes give it a lifted aromatic quality. Get yourself a glass of history, and let it take you on a journey.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine comes from 115-year-old vines in the Adelaide region, making it a true piece of viticultural history. Old vines like these produce incredibly concentrated fruit with complex flavour profiles that simply cannot be replicated by younger plantings. The vines have weathered over a century of seasons, developing deep root systems that access unique mineral profiles in the soil, contributing to the wine's exceptional depth and character that earned it 96 points from James Halliday.

Black Market Deals are anonymous offerings that allow prestigious wineries to offer their premium wines at exceptional value without affecting their regular retail pricing structure. This practice protects the winery's brand positioning while giving wine lovers access to outstanding quality at reduced prices. The 96-point Halliday rating and Special Value Award suggest this comes from a highly regarded producer whose regular bottlings likely command much higher prices.

The small percentage of shiraz acts as a seasoning agent, adding structure and those characteristic peppery notes that complement grenache's natural fruit-forward character. This blending technique is classic in Australian winemaking, where shiraz provides backbone and spice to balance grenache's softer, more generous fruit flavours. The combination creates a more complex wine with better aging potential than either variety might achieve alone.

The wine's rich blackberry and chocolate notes, combined with vanilla from oak integration, make it perfect for hearty dishes like slow-cooked lamb, beef bourguignon, or aged hard cheeses. The herbaceous lift and peppery shiraz component also complement Mediterranean cuisine, particularly dishes with rosemary, thyme, or grilled vegetables. Its full-bodied nature means it can stand up to bold flavours and rich sauces without being overwhelmed.

Given the old vine fruit source and 96-point rating, this wine has excellent cellaring potential of 10-15 years from vintage. The subtle oak integration and full-bodied structure suggest it's built for longevity, with the tannins and acidity providing the framework for extended aging. Old vine grenache typically develops beautiful secondary flavours of leather, earth, and dried herbs over time, while maintaining its core fruit character.
