An elegant, yet gutsy, grenache blend with beautifully complex fruit and a well-integrated, savoury edge. We wish we could wax lyrical to you about this family owned winery, but we've promised to keep this one super hush-hush. It is an icon after all, and once it lands at your door you'll get why we're over here freaking out.

Why do we love this wine?

Planted by the family in the 1960's, the soil of this grenache vineyard was so tough that about 10% of the vines failed to take and needed to be replanted. Well, this is where the magic happened, the 10% was replaced with mataro grapes, not grenache as first thought, and so a premium, single vineyard, grenache/ mataro blend was accidentally born. Fast forward 60-odd years and this little happy accident has been bringing smiles to our faces for many many years. Red fruited, delicate and floral but with expressive oaky undertones and generous spice. This is an expertly balanced wine with something to offer for red drinkers of any style.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine was born from a happy accident in the 1960s when 10% of grenache vines failed to establish in the tough Eden Valley soil and were replanted with mataro instead. This unintentional blend creates a more complex flavour profile than pure grenache, with the mataro adding structure and spice to complement grenache's characteristic red fruit and floral notes. The result is a wine that bridges different red wine styles, offering both delicacy and depth.

Eden Valley's challenging soil conditions, which initially caused vine establishment issues, actually contribute to the wine's premium quality by stressing the vines and concentrating flavours. The region's cool climate and elevation preserve the delicate floral characteristics of grenache while allowing the mataro component to develop its spicy, structured backbone. This terroir creates wines with excellent balance between fruit expression and mineral complexity, evident in this blend's combination of red fruit, spice, and oaky undertones.

The wine's balanced profile of red fruit, spice, and chocolate notes makes it incredibly food-friendly across various cuisines. Its medium body and spice elements pair beautifully with Mediterranean dishes like lamb tagine or herb-crusted pork, while the raspberry and chocolate flavours complement game meats and aged cheeses. The mataro component adds enough structure to handle richer dishes, yet the grenache's delicacy won't overpower lighter fare like roasted vegetables or charcuterie.

At six years of age, this grenache blend is entering its prime drinking window, with the oaky undertones now beautifully integrated with the fruit. Grenache-based blends typically develop complexity between 5-10 years, and the mataro component adds structure that supports further ageing. While delicious now, it could continue to evolve for another 3-5 years, developing more tertiary flavours and softer tannins, making it suitable for both immediate enjoyment and short-term cellaring.

A 4.3 Vivino rating places this wine in the top tier of user-rated wines, indicating exceptional quality and broad appeal among wine drinkers. This high rating, combined with recognition as an 'Iconic Producer', suggests consistent winemaking excellence and a reputation built over decades. The hand-picked designation further reinforces the premium approach, as selective harvesting typically results in higher quality fruit and more concentrated flavours, justifying both the rating and the wine's expertly balanced character.
