Beechworth doesn't do ordinary. Neither do these two winemakers. Grown at arguably the coolest grenache site in the entire country, this is about as far from a warm-climate, fruit-bomb grenache as you can get. Instead think pinot noir - because that's exactly how it's made. Perfumed, fine-boned and seriously sophisticated. We're in love.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

The two winemakers behind this are among the most respected names in one of Australia's most premium cool-climate regions - a viticulturist and winemaker whose combined obsession with quality shows in every single bottle they put their names to. When these guys make something, people pay attention. If you love pinot noir and you haven't explored cool-climate Grenache yet, this is your entry point. This one unfurls itself with mulberry, blue and red fruits at the core, lavender, anise, bay leaf and a smoky charcuterie complexity that gives it a savoury depth that's completely captivating. The tannins are fine, the palate flows long and effortlessly, and the finish lingers in the best possible way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Beechworth's cool climate and granite soils create a distinctly elegant style of Grenache that differs markedly from warmer regions like the Barossa Valley. The cooler temperatures allow the grapes to retain natural acidity while developing complex spice notes, resulting in wines with finesse rather than power. This terroir produces Grenache with distinctive mineral undertones and refined tannin structure that showcases the variety's more sophisticated side.

Fighting Gully Road has earned iconic status through their pioneering work in Beechworth, consistently crafting wines that express the unique character of this distinctive region. Their approach focuses on minimal intervention winemaking that allows the granite-influenced terroir to shine through. The 90-point rating reflects their reputation for producing Grenache that balances power with elegance, establishing them as leaders in showcasing what cool-climate Australian Grenache can achieve.

The allspice and almond notes in this light-bodied Grenache make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with Mediterranean cuisine and dishes featuring herbs and spices. Try it with lamb tagine, where the wine's spice elements complement the dish's aromatics, or with roasted vegetables and goat cheese. The wine's elegant structure also pairs beautifully with charcuterie, grilled salmon, or mushroom-based dishes where its subtle complexity won't overpower delicate flavours.

Serve this Grenache slightly below room temperature, around 16-18°C, to highlight its elegant structure and spice characteristics. The 2023 vintage is drinking beautifully now but can be cellared for 5-8 years, during which the almond notes will develop greater complexity. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place away from temperature fluctuations to preserve the wine's delicate balance and allow its Beechworth terroir characteristics to evolve gracefully.

The 2023 vintage in Beechworth benefited from ideal growing conditions that produced wines with exceptional balance between fruit concentration and natural acidity. Cool nights during ripening preserved the delicate spice notes while warm days ensured full flavour development, creating Grenache with both intensity and elegance. This vintage showcases the variety's ability to express terroir clearly, with the allspice and almond characteristics being particularly pronounced and well-integrated.
