Wine orbit described this wine as having an "enticing bouquet", we'd go a step further, we'd say it's so fragrant that if you popped a bottle on a Wednesday, you'd still be smelling ripe blood plums on Friday morning. It's not just the nose either, cling onto your socks Mofo, the first sip of this is gonna knock them clean off.

Why do we love this wine?

The fruit for this hottie was sourced from 68 to 105-year-old vines in the famed Marananga sub-region of Barossa. Destemmed (with 20% stalks added - it is grenache after all), matured in seasoned French oak and shipped off all around the country to be enjoyed by thirsty little Mofos like us! Seems simple enough right? Wrong! This is where the nuance comes in, the slope of the Marananga hills, the soil type, the brand of the barrels and, most importantly, the know-how of the winemaker. Lucky for us this winemaker knows everything there is to know about the land, the soil, the barrels and whatever else you could possibly think of. A smart wine made by a smart, albeit mysterious, man!

Frequently Asked Questions

Barossa Valley's warm continental climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for Grenache, producing wines with concentrated fruit flavours and distinctive earthy minerality. The region's old vine Grenache plantings, some dating back over 100 years, contribute to the complexity and depth found in wines like this 2023 vintage. Barossa Grenache typically shows more power and structure compared to cooler climate expressions, while maintaining the variety's characteristic cherry and raspberry fruit profile.

The exceptional 95-point rating reflects this Grenache's outstanding quality across multiple dimensions - its single vineyard sourcing ensures concentrated, site-specific character, while the boutique producer's careful winemaking preserves the variety's natural elegance. The wine likely demonstrates perfect balance between the cherry and raspberry fruit flavours and earthy complexity, with the medium body providing excellent structure. Such high scores for Grenache are particularly noteworthy as the variety is gaining recognition for producing world-class wines in Australia.

Serve this Grenache slightly below room temperature at 16-18°C to highlight its cherry and raspberry fruit while allowing the earthy undertones to emerge. The medium body makes it versatile for food pairing - try it with grilled lamb, Mediterranean dishes, or aged cheeses where the wine's fruit-forward character won't be overwhelmed. Decanting for 30 minutes can help integrate the flavours, though this young 2023 vintage is approachable now while having potential to develop further complexity over the next 5-7 years.

The cherry and raspberry profile of this Grenache makes it exceptional with duck breast, where the fruit complements the rich meat, or with mushroom-based dishes that echo the wine's earthy notes. Mediterranean cuisine like ratatouille or herb-crusted lamb work beautifully, as do aged hard cheeses such as aged cheddar or Manchego. The wine's medium body and fruit-forward character also pair surprisingly well with dark chocolate desserts, where the berry flavours create a harmonious bridge between savoury and sweet.

The 8/10 Halliday Vintage Rating for 2023 indicates a very good to excellent year for Australian wine production. This rating suggests ideal growing conditions with balanced rainfall and temperature, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex flavours while retaining natural acidity. For Grenache specifically, 2023's conditions would have favoured the development of the concentrated cherry and raspberry characters seen in this wine, while the earthy minerality suggests excellent terroir expression from the single vineyard source.
