Sam Kim called this wine "gorgeously fragrant", we'd go a step further, we'd say it's so fragrant that if you popped a bottle on a Wednesday, you'd still be smelling ripe blood plums on Friday morning. It's not just the nose either, cling onto your socks Mofo, the first sip of this will knock them clean off.

Why do we love this wine?

The fruit for this hottie was sourced from 68 to 105-year-old vines in the famed Marananga sub-region of Barossa. Destemmed (with 20% stalks added - it is grenache after all), matured in seasoned French oak and shipped off all around the country to be enjoyed by thirsty little Mofos like us! Seems simple enough right? Wrong! This is where the nuance comes in, the slope of the Marananga hills, the soil type, the brand of the barrels and, most importnantly, the know-how of the winemaker. Luck for us this winemaker knows everything there is to know about the land, the soil, the barrels and whatever else you could possibly think of. A smart wine made by a smart, albeit mysterious, man!

Frequently Asked Questions

The 68 to 105-year-old vines in Marananga represent some of Australia's most precious viticultural heritage. Ancient vines develop extensive root systems that penetrate deep into the hillside soils, accessing mineral complexity and water reserves that younger vines simply can't reach. These old Grenache vines naturally produce smaller yields of intensely concentrated fruit, while the Marananga sub-region's elevated position and unique soil composition create ideal conditions for this Mediterranean variety to express its full potential.

Adding 20% stalks back into the fermentation is a classic technique for Grenache that enhances both structure and aromatics. The stems contribute natural tannins and create small channels within the ferment that improve air circulation, leading to more even extraction. This technique also adds a distinctive spicy, herbaceous complexity and helps lift the wine's natural rose petal aromatics, while providing the backbone needed to support Grenache's typically soft, fruit-forward character.

Sam Kim's 95-point score places this Grenache in exceptional company, representing wine of outstanding quality that delivers complexity, balance, and regional character. This rating suggests the wine successfully captures the essence of old-vine Marananga fruit while demonstrating masterful winemaking technique. For a variety that can sometimes lack structure, achieving this score indicates the winemaker has crafted a Grenache with both immediate appeal and the depth to reward cellaring.

Black Market Deal wines are typically premium bottles from established producers sold anonymously at significantly reduced prices. The mystery element allows renowned winemakers to offer their wines without affecting their regular retail pricing structure. Given the old-vine Marananga fruit, seasoned French oak maturation, and 95-point rating, this represents exceptional value from what's clearly an experienced producer with intimate knowledge of this prestigious Barossa sub-region.

Serve this Grenache slightly below room temperature (around 16-18°C) to highlight its elegant rose petal aromatics and raspberry fruit character. The medium body and earthy undertones make it incredibly food-friendly - try it with herb-crusted lamb, duck confit, or aged hard cheeses. The wine's balance of fruit and earthiness, enhanced by the seasoned French oak, means it will pair beautifully with Mediterranean cuisine or anything featuring rosemary, thyme, or other aromatic herbs.
