There is a fair bit of a chat about grenache at the moment, and if you're wondering why, drink this 97pt stunner. There is so much flavour and complexity packed into this wine, yet it remains understated and compact. Premium fruit coupled with expert winemaking - nothing beats it.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Now we're getting to the grown-up stuff. Of course, all wine is grown up (we did check your D.O.B after all), but this is where grenache graduates from the 'wine bar pour' to the 'special occasion' kind of drop. There is a thin vein of tension running throughout this grenache, which makes for very exciting drinking. Deftly handled wine at its truest, wine that almost shocks you from the first swirl. Aromatically, this wine is outstanding. Partial whole bunch fermentation shows off the elegant side of grenache with pepper, red cherry, raspberry and cinammon enticing you into the first sip. Boy, oh, boy: does it reward you on the palate. Expansive, evolving, firm and voluptuous. You could study this wine for hours, but I guarantee it won't last you that long. Luckily, a wine like this is set for (very) long innings, so a case of 6 is sure to serve you well.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Grenache represents a significant step up in complexity and craftsmanship, featuring partial whole bunch fermentation that adds structural elegance and spice complexity. The winemaking technique creates a 'thin vein of tension' throughout the wine, elevating it from casual drinking to special occasion territory. Its aromatic intensity and evolving palate structure demonstrate the sophisticated potential of Barossa Grenache when handled by skilled producers.

Partial whole bunch fermentation introduces grape stems during fermentation, which contributes to the wine's elegant pepper notes and adds structural tannins that create textural complexity. This technique enhances the natural spice characteristics of Grenache while maintaining the bright red cherry and raspberry fruit flavours. The stems also contribute to the wine's impressive ageing potential and the distinctive tension that runs through the palate.

A 97-point rating from Wine Orbit places this Grenache in the exceptional category, indicating outstanding quality that rivals the world's finest examples of the variety. This score, combined with recognition as a 'Cult Producer' and 'Killer Vintage', suggests the wine demonstrates perfect balance, complexity, and regional expression. Such high ratings typically indicate wines with exceptional ageing potential and the ability to develop greater complexity over time.

The 2021 vintage has earned 'Killer Vintage' recognition, indicating exceptional growing conditions that allowed Grenache to achieve optimal ripeness while retaining natural acidity and structure. Barossa's 2021 season likely provided the perfect balance of warmth and cool periods, enabling the development of intense aromatics and the complex flavour profile evident in this wine. The vintage's quality is reflected in the wine's ability to be both immediately rewarding and built for long-term cellaring.

This Grenache is described as being 'set for very long innings', indicating excellent cellaring potential due to its structural tannins and natural acidity. The wine's current intensity and complexity suggest it will continue evolving for 10-15 years, developing secondary flavours of leather, earth, and dried herbs alongside the primary fruit. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place, and consider opening one bottle every few years to track its development and determine your preferred drinking window.
