Why do we love this wine?

This family first bought vineyards in McLaren Vale in 1871, those same vineyards, along with many others are still owned and cared for by the family to this day. Every year, every month, every day spent passing down and learning everything there is to know about viticulture in McLaren Vale is evident in this wine. The former Petaluma winemaker that created this stunning drop has a philosophy of letting the grapes speak for themselves, to tell a story of the specific vineyards that they are pulled from. Well, in this wine, the grapes aren't just speaking, they're singing! Beautifully made grenache.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine comes from a family with 150+ years of McLaren Vale heritage, dating back to 1871, giving them unparalleled understanding of the region's terroir. The former Petaluma winemaker behind this bottle follows a minimal intervention philosophy, allowing the specific vineyard characteristics to shine through. McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for Grenache, producing wines with exceptional concentration and complexity that reflect generations of viticultural knowledge.

The 2020 vintage in McLaren Vale was characterised by excellent growing conditions that allowed Grenache to reach optimal ripeness while retaining natural acidity. This vintage showcases the variety's signature spice and strawberry notes in perfect balance, with the full-bodied structure indicating concentrated fruit flavours. The 94-point James Suckling rating confirms this vintage captured the essence of what makes McLaren Vale Grenache so distinctive - power combined with elegance.

The rich, spice-driven profile and full-bodied structure make this Grenache perfect for hearty Mediterranean dishes like lamb tagine, grilled chorizo, or herb-crusted leg of lamb. The strawberry notes complement dishes with subtle sweetness, such as duck with cherry sauce or barbecued pork ribs. Its robust character can also stand up to aged hard cheeses and charcuterie, making it an excellent choice for entertaining or special occasions.

Black Market Deals typically feature premium wines from renowned producers at exceptional prices, often because the winery prefers to remain anonymous to protect their regular retail relationships. Given the 94-point James Suckling rating and the estate's iconic status with 150+ years of McLaren Vale history, this represents outstanding value. The anonymity allows wine lovers to access museum-quality Grenache from a legendary producer at a fraction of its usual premium price.

Store this full-bodied Grenache in a cool, dark place at 12-15°C to preserve its complex spice and fruit characteristics. Serve slightly below room temperature (16-18°C) to highlight both the strawberry fruit notes and the wine's structural elements. While drinking beautifully now, this estate-grown Grenache from such an established producer has the concentration to develop additional complexity over the next 5-8 years with proper cellaring.
