Why do we love this wine?

This wine has really come into its own. Five years of bottle age has softened the edges, helped the acid, spice and fruit to all integrate and added hints of tobacco, leather and other aged characters. That said, if you're not particularly into aged wines, this will still bring something to the table for you. Bright red cherries, strawberries and raspberries, a complex savoury spice and a rounded palate ensure that any pretty much anyone who's ever enjoyed a grenache will find something wonderful here.

Frequently Asked Questions

The extended bottle age has transformed this wine from a youthful fruit-forward expression into a more complex, integrated wine. The natural tannins have softened considerably, while the acidity has mellowed and harmonised with the fruit flavours. Most notably, secondary characteristics like tobacco and leather have emerged, adding sophisticated layers that only develop through proper cellaring. This evolution demonstrates why Grenache from quality regions like Heathcote can reward patient collectors.

Heathcote's ancient Cambrian soils and continental climate create perfect conditions for Grenache to develop both power and elegance. The region's warm days allow the variety to achieve full phenolic ripeness, while cool nights preserve the bright acidity evident in this wine. The mineral-rich red earth contributes to the complex savoury spice profile, helping explain why this producer earned 'Mofo Fave Producer' status and why Heathcote Grenache consistently punches above its weight internationally.

This Grenache strikes a rare balance between complexity and approachability that makes it versatile for different palates. While the tobacco and leather notes satisfy those seeking mature wine characteristics, the bright cherry and berry fruit remains prominent enough to please drinkers who prefer fresher styles. The medium body and integrated tannins mean it won't overwhelm newcomers, yet the layered spice and savoury elements provide enough intrigue for experienced wine enthusiasts.

The wine's evolved profile makes it excellent with dishes that can match its complexity - think slow-cooked lamb with herbs, aged hard cheeses, or charcuterie where the tobacco and leather notes complement cured meats beautifully. The bright fruit core also pairs wonderfully with duck or game birds, while the savoury spice elements work brilliantly with Mediterranean cuisine featuring rosemary, thyme, and olive tapenade. The medium body means it won't overpower lighter proteins like pork or chicken.

Unlike young Grenache which often showcases primary fruit and can sometimes feel a bit loose or jammy, this aged example demonstrates the variety's true potential for elegance and structure. The integration achieved through bottle age means no single element dominates - the fruit, acid, and tannins work in harmony rather than competing. The emergence of tertiary flavours like tobacco and leather shows how quality Grenache develops complexity that rivals more famous varieties, justifying its 90-point rating and premium positioning.
