Why do we love this wine?

This is a stunning wine. It exudes a deep ruby red colour in the glass. It's bursting with vibrant red fruit aromas; sun-ripened strawberries and red cherries, with subtle floral notes and a touch of vanilla and baking spices from oak ageing. The palate is packed full of juicy red fruits, and balanced by fresh acidity, and velvety tannin. Red plum, cranberry, and spiced red currant lead into a lingering, well defined finish. There's immediate pleasure on offer here, but this wine will go a while yet if you're thinking about laying it down.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This McLaren Vale Grenache showcases the exceptional quality that old vine fruit can deliver, earning an outstanding 98 points from Winestate Magazine. McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for Grenache, allowing the variety to develop its characteristic spicy complexity while maintaining vibrant fruit character. The combination of old vines and expert winemaking has produced a wine that balances immediate drinking pleasure with serious ageing potential.

While this wine offers immediate pleasure with its juicy red fruit character, it's built for the long haul thanks to its full-bodied structure and balanced tannins. Quality Grenache from McLaren Vale's old vines typically develops beautifully over 8-12 years, with the fruit flavours evolving into more complex secondary characters like leather, earth, and dried herbs. The oak integration and natural acidity provide the backbone needed for extended cellaring.

The wine's rich fruit profile and velvety tannins make it perfect for Mediterranean-inspired dishes like lamb tagine, grilled chorizo, or herb-crusted leg of lamb. The spicy oak notes complement barbecued meats beautifully, while the fresh acidity cuts through rich, tomato-based dishes like osso buco or ratatouille. For cheese pairings, try aged hard cheeses like Manchego or Pecorino that echo the wine's savoury complexity.

McLaren Vale's warm, dry climate and diverse soil types create perfect conditions for Grenache to ripen fully while retaining natural acidity. The region's old vine plantings, some dating back over a century, produce concentrated fruit with exceptional depth and character. The proximity to the ocean provides cooling influences that help preserve the variety's signature bright fruit flavours while allowing the development of complex spice and earth notes that define premium Australian Grenache.

The exceptional scores from both Winestate Magazine (98 points) and Wine Orbit (96 points) indicate this is a benchmark example of Australian Grenache. These consistently high ratings from different critics suggest the wine displays textbook varietal character with outstanding balance and complexity. The Gold Medal and Five Star awards further confirm this represents exceptional value and quality, particularly impressive for a variety that's often undervalued compared to Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon.
