This is plummy and ripe with blueberries and raspberries in the mix. The wine has enough acid to wrap that parcel of juicy fruit up and deliver it neatly through a lone, powerful finish.

Why do we love this wine?

We couldn't be more excited about the rise and rise of grenache in Australia. The renewed focus has allowed for more varied iterations, and wines with greater complexity. Where once all grenache was destined for the near ubiquitous GSM, now the variety is allowed to shine. This is plummy and ripe with blueberries and raspberries in the mix. The wine has enough acid to wrap that parcel of juicy fruit up and deliver it neatly through a lone, powerful finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Australian winemakers are increasingly recognising Grenache's potential as a standalone variety rather than just a blending component in traditional GSM wines. The Barossa Valley's warm climate and old vine plantings create ideal conditions for producing complex, full-bodied expressions that showcase the grape's natural fruit intensity and spice characteristics. This shift has allowed producers to craft more nuanced wines that highlight Grenache's unique personality.

The 2018 vintage benefited from excellent growing conditions that allowed the Grenache grapes to develop full phenolic ripeness while retaining natural acidity. This balance is crucial for Grenache, as it prevents the wine from becoming overly jammy or losing its structural backbone. The result is a wine that combines the variety's signature plummy richness with enough acid drive to ensure longevity and food compatibility.

Serve this wine at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to allow its complex fruit flavours and full body to shine. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help integrate the wine's components and soften any youthful tannins. The wine's rich profile makes it perfect for hearty dishes like lamb, beef stews, or aged cheeses, where its fruit intensity can complement rather than overpower the food.

This Grenache showcases the variety's classic dark fruit spectrum with prominent plum, blueberry, and raspberry notes, complemented by subtle violet aromatics. The Barossa terroir adds depth and complexity, while the wine's full-bodied structure provides a powerful, lingering finish. The interplay between ripe fruit and natural acidity creates a wine that's both immediately approachable and structured enough for medium-term cellaring.

While this 2018 Grenache is drinking beautifully now with its vibrant fruit expression, it has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 5-8 years. Grenache typically evolves gracefully, developing secondary flavours of leather, herbs, and spice while maintaining its core fruit character. If you enjoy primary fruit flavours, drink it within the next 2-3 years; for more developed, savoury complexity, cellar it longer.
