Why do we love this wine?

We love Barossa for many reasons, but grenache will always hold a special place in the hearts of many. One of the greatest treasures is the gnarly old grenache vines the region is home to. Wines like these are exemplars of old vine greatness; hand harvested from 95 year old bush vines and passed to old French oak after fermentation. Some whole bunches in the ferment have given this wine a grandiose florality, so you’d be forgiven for thinking this wine is all fun and games from first impressions. Dive into the glass, and you’ll see the serious side: round, plump, and layered. Plums, macerated strawberries, chocolate, cherry, a touch of anise even whispers on the finish. Those old vines might require skilled hands to nurture their abundant potential, but they pay the hard work back in spades.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Part of our Women in Wine Collection

We are committed to ALWAYS having wines available that are made by women. In an industry that’s still dominated by men, we believe in celebrating the incredible work women are doing. Here’s to our Women in Wine!

This winery is owned and operated by women, who are also the winemakers! Because it’s a Black Market wine we’re sworn to secrecy. These ladies are deadset legends, though.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ancient bush vines like these develop incredibly deep root systems that access unique mineral profiles and water sources, creating wines with exceptional concentration and complexity. The low yields from these gnarly old vines mean each grape carries intense flavour compounds that simply can't be replicated in younger plantings. These heritage vines are living treasures of the Barossa, representing decades of adaptation to the terroir and producing fruit with a depth and character that defines world-class grenache.

Including whole grape bunches during fermentation introduces stems and intact berries into the process, which adds structural tannins and creates that distinctive floral lift mentioned in this wine. The stems contribute spice notes and textural complexity, while whole berries undergo carbonic maceration, producing bright fruit aromatics and silky textures. This technique is particularly effective with grenache as it enhances the variety's natural perfume while adding layers of complexity that develop beautifully with age.

The initial impression showcases grenache's naturally exuberant, floral personality - the 'fun' side that makes it so approachable and charming. However, the serious depth comes from the old vine fruit concentration, careful winemaking, and French oak maturation, which create layers of plums, chocolate, and spice that reveal themselves gradually. This duality is the hallmark of exceptional grenache - immediately appealing yet rewarding contemplative drinking with its evolving complexity and full-bodied structure.

This full-bodied grenache with its rich fruit profile and spice notes pairs beautifully with Mediterranean-inspired dishes like lamb tagine, duck confit, or char-grilled vegetables with herbs. The wine's plush texture and chocolate undertones make it excellent with aged cheeses and charcuterie, while the cherry and anise notes complement game meats and hearty stews. The French oak integration means it can handle robust flavours without being overwhelmed, making it versatile for both casual and fine dining occasions.

Scoring 96 points at the Barossa Valley Wine Show and 95 points from respected critic Huon Hooke places this grenache in the elite tier of Australian wines. These scores, combined with multiple gold medals, indicate exceptional winemaking from fruit sourcing through to bottling. Such recognition from both regional competitions and independent critics suggests this wine represents outstanding value, particularly as a Black Market deal, offering premium quality typically found in much more expensive bottles.
