Why do we love this wine?

Blewitt Springs, a sub-region of McLaren Vale, specialises in excellent-quality grenache. So much so, in fact, that grape is now synonymous with the region. It's easy to see, then, how exciting this opportunity is! Vines planted in 1965 offer incredibly concentrated fruit that delivers outstanding quality wine that is singing right now. Ripe red fruits (raspberries, cherries, red-currants) are perfectly intertwined with spices and amazingly silky tannins. This is Vale grenache at its absolute finest!

Frequently Asked Questions

Blewitt Springs has become synonymous with grenache due to its unique terroir that produces exceptional quality fruit. The sub-region's sandy soils and Mediterranean climate create ideal conditions for grenache vines to develop concentrated flavours and elegant structure. This particular wine showcases why Blewitt Springs is considered one of Australia's premier grenache-producing areas, with the region's reputation built on consistently delivering wines of outstanding character and complexity.

Vines planted in 1965 are now nearly 60 years old, qualifying as genuine old vines that produce significantly more concentrated and complex fruit. Old vine grenache typically yields smaller crops with more intense flavours, deeper colour, and greater structural complexity than younger plantings. The extensive root systems of these mature vines access deeper soil layers and minerals, contributing to the wine's remarkable depth and the silky tannin structure that makes this grenache so exceptional.

Yes, this grenache is described as 'singing right now', indicating it has reached an optimal drinking window where all elements are beautifully integrated. The 2017 vintage has had sufficient time to develop complexity while retaining its vibrant fruit character. However, quality grenache from old vines like this can continue to evolve gracefully for many years, so you can enjoy it immediately or cellar it for further development of secondary and tertiary flavours.

This rich, full-bodied grenache with its ripe red fruit profile and silky tannins pairs beautifully with Mediterranean cuisine, particularly dishes featuring lamb, duck, or game meats. The wine's spice notes complement herb-crusted roasts, while its fruit-forward character works wonderfully with tomato-based dishes and aged cheeses. The silky tannin structure also makes it an excellent match for charcuterie and slow-cooked stews where the wine's complexity can shine alongside robust flavours.

A 96-point rating from Wine Orbit places this grenache in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that represents the pinnacle of what McLaren Vale grenache can achieve. Wine Orbit is known for their rigorous tasting standards, so this score reflects not just immediate drinking pleasure but also the wine's technical excellence, complexity, and aging potential. The five-star rating further emphasises that this represents exceptional value and quality within its category, making it a standout example of Australian grenache.
