This wine was described by a reviewer as "gorgeously fragrant", we'd go a step further, we'd say it's so fragrant that if you popped a bottle on a Wednesday, you'd still be smelling ripe blood plums on Friday morning. It's not just the nose either, cling onto your socks Mofo, the first sip of this will knock them clean off.

Why do we love this wine?

The fruit for this hottie was sourced from 63 to 100-year-old vines in the famed Marananga sub-region of Barossa. Destemmed (with 20% stalks added - it is grenache after all), matured in seasoned French oak and shipped off all around the country to be enjoyed by thirsty little Mofos like us! Seems simple enough right? Wrong! This is where the nuance comes in, the slope of the Marananga hills, the soil type, the brand of the barrels and, most importnantly, the know-how of the winemaker. Luck for us this winemaker knows everything there is to know about the land, the soil, the barrels and whatever else you could possibly think of. A smart wine made by a smart, albeit mysterious, man!

Frequently Asked Questions

The inclusion of 20% stems is a traditional technique particularly suited to Grenache, as this variety benefits from the additional tannin structure and spice complexity that stems provide. The stems also help create micro-oxygenation during fermentation, which enhances the wine's aromatic intensity and adds a distinctive herbal note. This approach is especially effective with old vine fruit like this, as the concentrated flavours can handle the extra structural elements without being overwhelmed.

Marananga sits on the elevated western slopes of the Barossa Valley, where the combination of ancient soils, optimal drainage, and slightly cooler temperatures creates ideal conditions for Grenache. The sub-region's unique terroir, including its red clay over limestone base, helps retain the variety's natural acidity while concentrating flavours. The sloping vineyards also provide excellent sun exposure throughout the day, crucial for Grenache's late-ripening characteristics and development of complex spice notes.

Old vines produce significantly lower yields but dramatically higher quality fruit, with roots that penetrate deep into the subsoil to access mineral-rich water sources. These ancient Grenache vines develop incredibly concentrated flavours and natural balance, requiring less intervention in the winery. The vine age also contributes to the wine's complexity and longevity, as older vines tend to produce fruit with better natural acidity and more nuanced tannin structure than younger plantings.

Seasoned French oak allows Grenache's delicate fruit characteristics to shine without being masked by aggressive oak flavours that new barrels would impart. This approach preserves the variety's natural cherry and spice notes while adding subtle complexity and texture. French oak's fine grain structure provides gentle oxygenation during maturation, helping to integrate tannins and develop the wine's medium-bodied profile without overwhelming the fruit's inherent elegance.

This 2016 Grenache is beautifully positioned in its drinking window, having had sufficient time to integrate its tannins and develop secondary flavours while retaining its vibrant fruit character. Grenache from quality Barossa sites like Marananga typically peaks between 5-10 years, making this vintage ideal for current consumption. However, given the old vine fruit and quality winemaking, it should continue to evolve gracefully for another 3-5 years if stored properly.
