This wine was described by a reviewer as "gorgeously fragrant", we'd go a step further, we'd say it's so fragrant that if you popped a bottle on a Wednesday, you'd still be smelling ripe blood plums on Friday morning. It's not just the nose either, cling onto your socks Mofo, the first sip of this will knock them clean off.

Why do we love this wine?

The fruit for this hottie was sourced from 63 to 100-year-old vines in the famed Marananga sub-region of Barossa. Destemmed (with 20% stalks added - it is grenache after all), matured in seasoned French oak and shipped off all around the country to be enjoyed by thirsty little Mofos like us! Seems simple enough right? Wrong! This is where the nuance comes in, the slope of the Marananga hills, the soil type, the brand of the barrels and, most importnantly, the know-how of the winemaker. Luck for us this winemaker knows everything there is to know about the land, the soil, the barrels and whatever else you could possibly think of. A smart wine made by a smart, albeit mysterious, man!

Frequently Asked Questions

Adding stems back to Grenache is a traditional technique that enhances the wine's structure and complexity. The stems contribute tannins and spice notes while allowing better air circulation during fermentation, which is particularly beneficial for Grenache's naturally soft character. This practice helps create more age-worthy wines with improved texture and aromatic intensity.

Marananga sits in the heart of the Barossa Valley with unique hillside slopes that provide excellent drainage and sun exposure crucial for Grenache ripening. The sub-region's ancient soils and elevation create ideal conditions for developing the variety's signature spice and fruit concentration. These geographical factors, combined with the area's warm climate, allow Grenache to achieve perfect phenolic ripeness while maintaining natural acidity.

Old vines naturally produce lower yields but dramatically higher quality fruit with more concentrated flavours and complex mineral characteristics. These ancient Grenache vines have developed extensive root systems that access deep soil nutrients and water reserves, creating wines with greater depth and longevity. The stress from age also intensifies the fruit's natural spice and berry characteristics that Grenache is renowned for.

This Grenache's blackberry and cherry fruit with spice notes pairs beautifully with Mediterranean cuisine, particularly herb-crusted lamb or beef dishes. The wine's medium body and balanced tannins complement charcuterie boards, aged cheeses, and grilled vegetables without overwhelming delicate flavours. Its spice profile also makes it excellent with barbecued meats or dishes featuring rosemary, thyme, and black pepper.

At eight years of age, this Grenache is entering its prime drinking window, showing developed tertiary flavours while retaining its vibrant fruit character. The seasoned French oak maturation and old vine fruit concentration suggest it can continue evolving for another 5-8 years if properly stored. However, Grenache's approachable nature means it's equally enjoyable now, offering immediate pleasure with its current balance of fruit, spice, and oak integration.
