Now, we're not the kind of wine-people that believe everything a reviewer says... unless it's James Suckling. We trust James Suckling. He's the kind of bloke that holds the passports on an overseas trip, never skips a round at the bar and always has IMPECCABLE wine recommendations. a 96 point review from Mr Suckling is serious business, this wine, is serious business.

Why do we love this wine?

This isn't your every-day, 'whack it in the esky and take it down the park', type grenache. This wine is an event in-and-of its self, the centre-piece of the table, demanding your attention with every whiff and sip... The year was 2013 and the wine world was different, grenache was different, this wine is different. Forget your trendy looking labels, your natural winemaking and your chilled reds, this is old school. Bold, expressive and delivering surprisingly powerful acid and tannin (given its age). 10+ years of bottle age has not wearied this beauty, rather emboldened and cemented the foundations of a wine you'll drinking (and thinking about) for the next 10 years - at least!

Frequently Asked Questions

This Grenache represents a pinnacle vintage from an iconic McLaren Vale winery, earning 96 points from James Suckling and museum release status. The 2013 vintage was exceptional in McLaren Vale, producing wines with remarkable structure and aging potential. After 10+ years of careful cellaring, this wine has developed complex tertiary flavours while maintaining its bold character and surprisingly robust tannin structure that defies typical Grenache expectations.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for Grenache, allowing the variety to develop intense fruit concentration while retaining natural acidity. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby coast help preserve the cherry and cranberry flavours while developing the earthy, mineral complexity evident in this wine. This terroir expression is what separates premium McLaren Vale Grenache from more simple, everyday versions.

Unlike the light, easy-drinking Grenache styles popular today, this wine represents old-school winemaking with bold extraction and serious structure. Most Grenache is consumed young and chilled, but this museum release demonstrates the variety's true aging potential with powerful acid and tannin that have integrated beautifully over a decade. The single vineyard sourcing and iconic winery pedigree ensure complexity that mass-produced Grenache simply cannot achieve.

Serve this wine at cellar temperature (16-18°C) in large Burgundy glasses to showcase its evolved aromatics and medium-bodied structure. The earthy, cherry, and cranberry flavours pair beautifully with game meats, aged cheeses, or Mediterranean dishes with herbs and olives. Given its 10+ years of bottle age, decant for 30-60 minutes to allow the wine to open fully and reveal its complex secondary and tertiary characteristics.

Despite being over a decade old, this Grenache shows remarkable vitality and structure suggesting another 10+ years of drinking pleasure ahead. The surprising tannin backbone and preserved acidity indicate the wine was made for long-term cellaring, unlike typical Grenache meant for early consumption. Premium McLaren Vale Grenache from exceptional vintages like 2013 can evolve gracefully for 15-20 years, developing leather, spice, and dried fruit complexity while maintaining its core fruit character.
