This is a mammoth producer on the Aussie wine scene. Their wines are not only among the best of the region, but the best of the continent. Any discussion about Australia's leading wineries that doesn't include this producer is, by default, incomplete.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Beautifully blue fruited despite the not-insignificant time in cellar. It has such richness and deep, brooding, plummy weight. A distinctly impressive wine that is in perfect shape – I suspect we may have intersected it at the height of its abilities, though it will surely stay there for some time. Beyond the dense fruit profile there's smoke, spice, bristly acid, wet earth, umami, terracotta minerality, grassy savoury notes, cedar and pine – entirely too much going on to capture in one thought. Buy it now, but be sure to save a bottle for when the 'rellies come by for Christmas lunch (or for when they leave, depending on how much you like your 'rellies).

Frequently Asked Questions

Grenache's naturally high sugar levels and robust tannin structure allow it to age gracefully, developing complex secondary flavours over time. This McLaren Vale example demonstrates how quality Grenache can maintain its fruit intensity while gaining earthy, savoury complexity. The wine's current peak drinking window showcases the perfect balance between youthful vigour and mature sophistication that makes aged Grenache so rewarding.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soil types, including the famous terra rossa over limestone, create perfect conditions for Grenache to ripen slowly and develop intense flavours. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes help retain acidity while allowing the grape's characteristic blue fruit flavours to concentrate. This terroir influence is evident in the wine's distinctive terracotta minerality and complex flavour profile.

Serve this wine at cellar temperature (16-18°C) in large Burgundy glasses to allow its complex aromatics to fully express themselves. Decant for 30-60 minutes before serving to help integrate the mature tannins and unlock the wine's full spectrum of flavours. The wine's medium body and savoury complexity make it perfect for slow-cooked meats, aged cheeses, or hearty Mediterranean dishes.

The wine's umami richness and earthy complexity pair beautifully with slow-braised lamb, duck confit, or mushroom-based dishes that echo its savoury character. The spice and cedar notes make it excellent with barbecued meats or charcuterie, while the underlying fruit sweetness balances rich, gamey flavours. Consider pairing with aged hard cheeses or dishes featuring herbs like rosemary and thyme.

This Grenache appears to be at its optimal drinking window, having developed the perfect balance of fruit, earth, and spice that defines mature Grenache. While it will likely hold this peak for several more years, the tasting notes suggest it's currently expressing its full potential. Given its museum release status and current drinking perfection, it's ideal for enjoying now while perhaps keeping a bottle for special occasions in the near future.
