This is a mammoth producer on the Aussie wine scene. Their wines are not only among the best of the region, but the best of the continent. Any discussion about Australia's leading wineries that doesn't include this producer is, by default, incomplete. And what are they famous for? This. Deeply ageable, single-vineyard red wines that drink like a dream for 25 years plus after harvest.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Beautifully blue fruited despite the not-insignificant time in cellar. It has such richness and deep, brooding, plummy weight. A distinctly impressive wine that is in perfect shape – I suspect we may have intersected it at the height of its drinking window, though it will surely stay there for some time. Beyond the dense fruit profile there's notes of char, spice, bristly acid, wet earth, umami, terracotta, cedar and pine – entirely too much going on to capture in one thought. Buy it now, but be sure to save a bottle for when the rellos come by for Christmas lunch (or for when they leave, depending on how much you like your rellos).

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine demonstrates Grenache's exceptional ageing potential when grown in premium regions like McLaren Vale. The variety's naturally high tannin structure and acidity, combined with the Mediterranean climate's intensity, creates wines that can evolve beautifully over decades. The current drinking window showcases how well-made Grenache develops complex tertiary flavours like cedar, pine, and umami while maintaining its core fruit character.

McLaren Vale's warm, dry climate and ancient soils create perfect conditions for Grenache to develop concentrated flavours and robust structure. The region's proximity to the ocean provides cooling influences that help retain acidity, essential for long-term cellaring. These geological and climatic factors contribute to the wine's ability to develop the complex earthy, terracotta, and spice notes that emerge with proper bottle age.

Decant this wine 30-60 minutes before serving to allow the complex aromatics to fully express themselves after two decades in bottle. Serve at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to showcase the intricate balance between fruit, earth, and spice. The wine's medium body and evolved tannins make it perfect for pairing with roasted meats, aged cheeses, or hearty Mediterranean dishes that complement its umami and earthy characteristics.

Blue fruit descriptors refer to darker, more intense berry flavours like blueberry, blackberry, and boysenberry, as opposed to red fruits like cherry or strawberry. In this mature Grenache, the blue fruit character indicates the wine has developed deeper, more concentrated flavours through bottle ageing. This evolution from bright red fruit to darker blue fruit is a hallmark of well-aged Grenache, showing how the wine has gracefully matured while retaining its essential fruit core.

The consistent high ratings from Vivino users, James Halliday, and Robert Parker reflect this wine's exceptional quality and the producer's reputation as a Five Red Star winery. These accolades recognise not just the wine's current drinking pleasure, but its technical excellence in winemaking and the successful expression of McLaren Vale terroir. The convergence of critical acclaim suggests this Grenache represents outstanding value and craftsmanship in Australian wine.
