This is a mammoth producer on the Aussie wine scene. Their wines are not only among the best of the region, but the best of the continent. Any discussion about Australia's leading wineries that doesn't include this producer is, by default, incomplete. And what are they famous for? This. Deeply ageable, single-vineyard red wines that drink like a dream for 25 years plus after harvest.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Beautifully blue fruited despite the not-insignificant time in cellar. It has such richness and deep, brooding, plummy weight. A distinctly impressive wine that is in perfect shape – I suspect we may have intersected it at the height of its drinking window, though it will surely stay there for some time. Beyond the dense fruit profile there's notes of char, spice, bristly acid, wet earth, umami, terracotta, cedar and pine – entirely too much going on to capture in one thought. Buy it now, but be sure to save a bottle for when the rellos come by for Christmas lunch (or for when they leave, depending on how much you like your rellos).

Frequently Asked Questions

Grenache's naturally high sugar content and robust tannin structure make it exceptionally age-worthy when crafted properly. This McLaren Vale example demonstrates the variety's ability to develop complex tertiary flavours like cedar, pine, and umami while maintaining its core fruit integrity. The wine appears to have hit its optimal drinking window, where primary fruit and developed bottle-age characteristics achieve perfect harmony.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soil types, including the famous terra rossa over limestone, create perfect conditions for Grenache cultivation. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes help retain acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness. This terroir influence is evident in the wine's distinctive earthy, terracotta notes that complement the variety's natural blue fruit character.

Decant this wine 30-60 minutes before serving to allow the complex aromatics to fully express themselves. Serve at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to showcase both the dense fruit profile and the intricate secondary notes of char, spice, and wet earth. The wine's medium body and bristly acidity make it perfect for rich, umami-driven dishes or aged cheeses.

The wine's combination of plummy fruit, earthy undertones, and umami complexity pairs beautifully with slow-cooked lamb, mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses. The char and spice notes make it an excellent match for barbecued meats, while the terracotta and cedar elements complement dishes with herbs like rosemary or thyme. Its bristly acidity cuts through rich, fatty foods effectively.

This Grenache appears to be at its peak drinking window, offering the perfect balance between youthful fruit and mature complexity. While it will likely maintain this quality for several more years, there's no benefit in further cellaring as it has already developed its full spectrum of flavours. The tasting notes suggest optimal integration of all elements, making now the ideal time to enjoy this exceptional vintage.
