From the cult Greenock Creek stable, Apricot Block is one of those Barossa sites that’s earned its own following. Planted in 1995 after an old apricot orchard was ripped out, this east-facing Marananga slope rises out of a creek bed and naturally crops to tiny yields of seriously concentrated fruit. Flint, quartz and sandy loams do the heavy lifting here, giving the block its signature power-meets-poise vibe year after year.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Super-inky and unapologetically Barossan in the glass. Get in close and it’s all swagger and detail at once: ripe blackberry and dark plum, black cherry compote, violets and new leather, with a flinty, ironstone edge that nods to the old apricot-orchard site this block was carved from. There’s quality oak in the mix too - mocha, dark chocolate, toasted spice - but it sits in the background like a well-cut suit, letting the fruit do the talking. The tannins are firm, fine and graphite-like, clamping down just enough to shape the wine and pull you into a long, seamless finish that feels built for the long haul. This is serious single-vineyard Shiraz with elegance tucked inside its power - decant now for maximum drama, or stash it and watch it unfurl over the next decade or two.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Apricot Block gets its name from the old apricot orchard that once occupied this site before being converted to vines. This historical land use has left its mark on the terroir, contributing to the wine's distinctive flinty, ironstone character that adds mineral complexity to the rich fruit flavours. The unique soil composition from decades of orchard cultivation creates an intriguing contrast between the wine's powerful Barossan fruit expression and its underlying mineral backbone.

This single-vineyard Shiraz is built for extended cellaring, with the structure and concentration to develop beautifully over the next decade or two. The firm, graphite-like tannins and quality oak integration suggest it will reward patience as these elements soften and integrate further. While drinking magnificently now with proper decanting, the wine's serious architecture means it will likely hit its peak drinking window in 5-8 years and maintain excellence well beyond that.

The wine's rich blackberry and dark plum flavours, combined with its mocha and dark chocolate oak notes, make it perfect for robust red meat dishes like grilled lamb with rosemary or slow-braised beef short ribs. The violet and leather aromatics also complement game meats beautifully, while the wine's mineral ironstone edge can handle strongly flavoured cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese. The full-bodied palate weight means it won't be overwhelmed by rich, sauce-based dishes.

James Halliday's 95-point rating reflects the wine's exceptional balance between power and elegance - a hallmark of outstanding Barossa Shiraz. The score recognises how the wine manages to be 'unapologetically Barossan' while maintaining sophistication through its fine tannin structure and seamless finish. Single-vineyard expressions like this demonstrate terroir specificity that elevates them above regional blends, and the Apricot Block's unique mineral character adds complexity that critics value highly.

Absolutely - decanting is highly recommended to unlock this wine's full potential and 'maximum drama' as described. The super-inky concentration and firm tannin structure benefit from aeration to soften and integrate the elements, allowing the complex aromatics of violets, new leather, and dark fruit to fully emerge. Given the wine's serious structure and quality oak integration, 1-2 hours of decanting will help the wine show its elegant side while maintaining its powerful Barossan character.
