Grant Burge doesn't need an introduction, but we'll give you one anyway: family-run since 1865, five generations deep in Barossa soil, and still turning out wines that make you double-check the price tag. The Balthasar is their Eden Valley flex, and it's a seriously good flex if you ask us. No wonder it's got 96 Halliday.

Why do we love this wine?
Pour it and you're looking at something so deep and dense it's flirting with black. The nose throws cooking spices and clove at you first, then blue and red fruit come through underneath - and it only gets more intense the longer it sits in the glass. On the palate, dark cherry and black plum lead the charge, backed by a proper spice hit of spice, with cocoa powder lingering in the background. It's lush and sweet-fruited but somehow still fine-grained, with tannin dense enough to give it real backbone. Everything moves together right through to a finish that's got grace, not just grunt.
