It seems impossible that wine could be this good- and then when you taste it, it all makes sense. It follows the thread of the other wines in it's umami complexity, mineral showcase, and deft delivery of fruit. Yet somehow, amongst all of these simply incredible wines, this is just... more. More balanced, more obscure, more harmonious, more ethereal, more elite. This is the mark by which all future cab franc will be judged, and I gotta say, its set the bar high.

Why do we love this wine?

This is Mendoza's elite. If Mendoza classified wines as Grand Crus, these would certainly earn that title. Gran Enemigo is the flagship range of cab francs highlighting the differences between some of the greatest single vineyards in Mendoza. El Enemigo is something of a dream team in Mendoza. It's the creation of Adrianna Catena, youngest daughter of Nicolas Catena (founder of Catena Zapata) and Alejandro Vigil, the chief winemaker of Catena Zapata. The pedigree doesn't get much better than that. Their focus on cabernet franc has been at the forefront of the modern Mendoza wine movement, as has their single site approach that is modelled after the practices of Burgundy and other Old World regions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gualtallary sits at high altitude in Argentina's Uco Valley, where the extreme elevation creates intense diurnal temperature variation - scorching days followed by frigid nights. This dramatic temperature swing allows Cabernet Franc to develop complex aromatics while retaining natural acidity, resulting in wines with both power and elegance that showcase the variety's herbaceous complexity alongside rich fruit concentration.

While Bordeaux Cabernet Franc tends towards earthy, mineral-driven profiles, this Argentine expression from Gualtallary delivers more concentrated blackberry fruit with fuller body due to the intense Andean sun and altitude. The 2020 vintage captures both the variety's signature green bell pepper notes and Argentina's ability to ripen fruit to exceptional levels, creating a more opulent style than traditional Loire Valley examples.

The wine's rich blackberry flavours and full body make it perfect for grilled red meats, particularly Argentine-style asado or herb-crusted lamb. The variety's natural herbaceous qualities complement dishes with rosemary, thyme, or chimichurri, while the wine's structure can handle rich, slow-cooked braises and aged hard cheeses without being overwhelmed.

The 2020 vintage is approaching its optimal drinking window, offering immediate pleasure with its concentrated blackberry fruit and full-bodied structure. However, quality Cabernet Franc from high-altitude Gualtallary can develop beautifully over 8-12 years, gradually revealing more complex secondary flavours of tobacco, leather, and spice while the tannins integrate further.

Gran Enemigo represents a collaboration between renowned winemaker Alejandro Vigil and Catena Zapata, focusing exclusively on high-altitude vineyard sites in Mendoza's most prestigious sub-regions. Their approach combines traditional Argentine terroir with modern winemaking precision, particularly in areas like Gualtallary where extreme conditions produce wines of exceptional concentration and complexity that rival the world's finest Cabernet Franc expressions.
