Why do we love this wine?
There is a thread of deep complexity running through all of these wines, but this the most intricate, in my opinion. Limestone dust, soy-sauce, sea breeze, brine, mushroom - the 'super-savoury umami' descriptors have come out to play. It has luscious shape and lift in the glass, and the intricacies of the wine unfold and reveal themselves at rest.
This is Mendoza's elite. If Mendoza classified wines as Grand Crus, these would certainly earn that title. Gran Enemigo is the flagship range of cab francs highlighting the differences between some of the greatest single vineyards in Mendoza. El Enemigo is something of a dream team in Mendoza. It's the creation of Adrianna Catena, youngest daughter of Nicolas Catena (founder of Catena Zapata) and Alejandro Vigil, the chief winemaker of Catena Zapata. The pedigree doesn't get much better than that. Their focus on cabernet franc has been at the forefront of the modern Mendoza wine movement, as has their single site approach that is modelled after the practices of Burgundy and other Old World regions.
