We always look forward to drinking this wine. Like, sit-by-the-door-waiting-for-the-post look forward to it. And here it is... despite the lofty expectations, it did not disappoint. Perfectly appealing to the Australian palate that has an affinity for richness, boldness, brashness. This is full bodied, delivering red fruit tightly and succinctly while flanked by unending nuance and lively mineral complexity. What a wine... delightful.

Why do we love this wine?

This beauty hails from Agrelo in Mendoza, Argentina, where vineyards sit at 930 meters above sea level with the Andes Mountains providing views that'll stop you dead in your tracks. The predominantly clay soils in this spectacular location produce the goods for this stunning vintage - majority cabernet franc backed by malbec adding that distinctly Argentine edge. Round, mellow, long tannins that glide across the palate beautifully. This is stellar cabernet franc elevated by malbec's Argentine personality, bearing the signature of one of South America's most revolutionary and creative winemakers working today. Ground breaking stuff.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Gran Enemigo showcases Cabernet Franc's unique expression in Argentina's high-altitude Mendoza region, blended with Malbec to create something distinctly South American. The 930-metre elevation and clay soils of Agrelo produce a fuller, rounder style than the herbaceous Loire Valley examples most people know. The Malbec addition brings Argentina's signature dark fruit intensity while maintaining Cabernet Franc's elegant structure.

Agrelo sits at 930 metres above sea level in Mendoza's premium wine zone, where the Andes Mountains create dramatic temperature swings between day and night. This diurnal variation helps preserve acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness in the grapes. The predominantly clay soils retain moisture and provide excellent drainage, creating ideal conditions for producing concentrated, age-worthy wines with exceptional depth.

Serve this full-bodied red at 16-18°C to showcase its complex blackcurrant and cedar notes. The wine's rich tannin structure and mulberry flavours make it perfect with grilled red meats, especially Argentine-style beef or lamb. The Malbec component adds enough power to handle bold flavours like chimichurri or aged cheeses, while the Cabernet Franc provides elegance for more refined dishes.

The 95-point Robert Parker score and 'Superb' Wine Enthusiast rating indicate this is exceptional quality for the vintage and region. These scores typically reflect outstanding balance, complexity, and ageing potential - wines that represent the pinnacle of their style. The consistently high ratings across different critics suggest this wine successfully combines power with finesse, a hallmark of great Argentine reds.

While the 2020 vintage is drinking beautifully now with its round, mellow tannins, this wine has the structure and concentration to develop further complexity over 5-8 years. The high-altitude fruit and quality winemaking suggest it will reward patience, developing tertiary flavours of leather, tobacco, and spice. However, the current balance of fruit and tannins makes it equally enjoyable for immediate consumption.
