We always look forward to drinking this wine. Like, sit-by-the-door-waiting-for-the-post look forward to it. And here it is... despite the lofty expectations, it did not disappoint. Perfectly appealing to the Australian palate that has an affinity for richness, boldness, brashness. This is full bodied, delivering red fruit tightly and succinctly while flanked by unending nuance and lively mineral complexity. What a wine... delightful.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This beauty hails from Agrelo in Mendoza, Argentina, where vineyards sit at 930 meters above sea level with the Andes Mountains providing views that'll stop you dead in your tracks. The predominantly clay soils in this spectacular location produce the goods for this stunning vintage - majority cabernet franc backed by malbec adding that distinctly Argentine edge. Round, mellow, long tannins that glide across the palate beautifully. This is stellar cabernet franc elevated by malbec's Argentine personality, bearing the signature of one of South America's most revolutionary and creative winemakers working today. Ground breaking stuff.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Gran Enemigo showcases how Argentine terroir transforms Cabernet Franc's classic herbaceous character. The high-altitude Agrelo vineyard at 930 metres creates intense fruit concentration, while the addition of Malbec - Argentina's signature grape - adds a distinctly South American richness and power that you won't find in Loire Valley expressions. The result is a fuller-bodied, more opulent style that bridges Old World elegance with New World intensity.

At 930 metres above sea level in the Andes foothills, these vines experience dramatic temperature swings between scorching days and cool nights. This diurnal variation allows the grapes to develop deep colour and flavour intensity while retaining crucial acidity, preventing the wine from becoming flabby despite its full-bodied nature. The thinner air at altitude also increases UV exposure, thickening grape skins and contributing to the wine's impressive tannin structure.

Serve at 16-18°C to showcase its complex aromatics and silky tannin structure. This wine's rich blackcurrant and cedar notes make it perfect for grilled red meats, especially Argentine-style beef or lamb with chimichurri. The Malbec component adds enough power to handle bold flavours like blue cheese or dark chocolate desserts, while the Cabernet Franc's natural acidity cuts through rich, fatty dishes beautifully.

The 95-point Robert Parker score places this among the world's elite Cabernet Franc expressions, while the 'Superb' Wine Enthusiast rating confirms its exceptional quality. These scores reflect not just the wine's immediate appeal, but its potential for cellar development - critics particularly value wines that show both current drinkability and long-term ageing potential. The high Vivino rating from everyday drinkers proves this isn't just critic-friendly, but genuinely enjoyable.

With its full-bodied structure and well-integrated tannins, this 2020 should continue evolving beautifully for 8-12 years from vintage. The clay soils of Agrelo produce wines with natural longevity, while the Cabernet Franc component will gradually develop more complex secondary flavours of tobacco, leather, and forest floor. Peak drinking will likely be 2025-2030, though it's already showing magnificently now for those who prefer more primary fruit expression.
