Giant Steps are the top of the tree when it comes to Yarra Valley pinot. How they have managed to get this much wine into the bottle, at this price, is confounding.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Ripe and juicy, with prickly little tannins that build alongside the acid to deliver a complex, structured, powerful little wine. Sour cherry and anise with rhubarb freshness and tart, winter strawberry. This is so generous and joyful - an utter delight to drink.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

" A 50/50% mix of upper and lower Yarra fruit; 35% whole bunches and matured in French oak (10% new). A bright crimson red. After a few good few swirls, aromas of ripe raspberries, black cherries, wild herbs and some crushed violets soon emerge. The palate, though, doesn't need much coaxing, and this silken, sappy wine has excellent depth and persistence. Will be even better six to 12 months from now." 96 Points, Halliday Wine Companion

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the exceptional balance that defines premium Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, combining ripe fruit intensity with structured tannins and bright acidity. The 96-point Halliday rating reflects its masterful expression of the region's cool-climate terroir, where the interplay of sour cherry, anise, and rhubarb creates complexity rarely achieved in lighter-bodied reds. Giant Steps' five red star winery status demonstrates their consistent ability to craft wines that capture both power and elegance in a single bottle.

Serve this Pinot Noir slightly below room temperature (14-16°C) to highlight its delicate aromatics and structured tannins. The wine's bright acidity and sour cherry profile make it exceptional with duck, salmon, or mushroom-based dishes that complement its earthy undertones. Its generous, joyful character also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses or charcuterie, where the tart strawberry notes can shine against rich, savoury flavours.

The 2023 vintage represents a relatively young expression of Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, capturing fresh, vibrant fruit flavours at their peak. This recent vintage showcases the immediate appeal of well-made Pinot Noir, with its ripe and juicy character reflecting excellent growing conditions. While delicious now, the wine's structured tannins and balanced acidity suggest it will develop additional complexity over the next 3-5 years, evolving from its current bright fruit focus toward more nuanced secondary flavours.

Giant Steps has earned recognition as a Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery and placement in the Top 100 Wineries 2023, reflecting their mastery of cool-climate winemaking. Their approach to Pinot Noir demonstrates deep understanding of Yarra Valley terroir, crafting wines that balance power with elegance - a notoriously difficult achievement with this temperamental variety. The consistent high ratings across their range indicate a winery that prioritises quality over quantity, making each release a reliable expression of premium Australian Pinot Noir.

The wine opens with bright sour cherry and tart winter strawberry, immediately engaging your palate with fresh, vibrant fruit. As it develops, anise spice emerges alongside rhubarb freshness, creating layers of complexity that evolve with each sip. The prickly tannins build gradually, providing structure without overwhelming the delicate fruit, while underlying mushroom earthiness adds depth and sophistication to the overall tasting experience.
