Giant Steps are the top of the tree when it comes to Yarra Valley pinot. How they have managed to get this much wine into the bottle, at this price, is confounding.

Why do we love this wine?

True leaders of the Australian wine industry: ranked and incredible #2 on Halliday's top 100 wineries. There is so much hype around the release of these wines, and the lofty standard has not only been met but exceeded with the 2024 vintage. Ripe and juicy, with prickly little tannins that build alongside the acid to deliver a complex, structured, powerful little wine. Sour cherry and anise with rhubarb freshness and tart, winter strawberry. This is so generous and joyful - an utter delight to drink.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

A 50/50% mix of upper and lower Yarra estate and grower fruit. 30% whole bunches. A very bright crimson purple. Pretty and complex with aromas of red cherry skins and rhubarb together with some pink peppercorn spice and a light savoury edge. More approachable than the '23. As a young wine, the medium-bodied palate is spicy, silky and long. It'll probably age well but it's so good to drink now that there's no need to bother!

Frequently Asked Questions

Giant Steps holds the prestigious #2 position on Halliday's Top 100 Wineries list and maintains a Five Red Star rating, representing the pinnacle of Australian winemaking excellence. This recognition reflects their consistent ability to produce wines that showcase the unique terroir of the Yarra Valley while maintaining exceptional quality standards. Their reputation has created significant anticipation around each vintage release, with wine enthusiasts eagerly awaiting their annual offerings.

The 2024 vintage has not only met but exceeded the already lofty expectations set by Giant Steps' previous releases, earning an impressive 95 points from the Halliday Wine Companion. This vintage showcases exceptional balance between ripeness and freshness, with the winemaking team successfully capturing the essence of what makes Yarra Valley Pinot Noir so distinctive. The wine demonstrates how favourable vintage conditions can elevate an already outstanding producer to new heights.

The wine's bright acidity, sour cherry notes, and light-bodied structure make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that complement its tart berry character. The rhubarb freshness and winter strawberry flavours pair beautifully with duck breast, salmon, or mushroom-based dishes, while the prickly tannins provide enough structure to handle roasted chicken or pork tenderloin. The wine's generous, joyful character also makes it excellent for casual dining with charcuterie or aged cheeses.

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and varied topography create perfect conditions for producing elegant, complex Pinot Noir with the distinctive characteristics showcased in this wine. The region's temperature variations allow for slow, even ripening that preserves the bright acidity and delicate fruit flavours evident in the sour cherry and wild berry notes. This terroir influence is what enables Giant Steps to consistently produce Pinot Noir that balances power with finesse, creating wines that are both structured and approachable.

This Pinot Noir offers a fascinating textural journey, beginning with its light-bodied, generous character before revealing layers of complexity through its prickly tannins that build progressively on the palate. The interplay between the wine's natural acidity and developing tannin structure creates a dynamic drinking experience that evolves with each sip. Despite being light-bodied, the wine delivers surprising power and structure, demonstrating how skilled winemaking can create depth without heaviness in Pinot Noir.
